Nestled in the magnificent Western Ghats is
the cool misty locale of Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra. Green and foggy
even in summer, this beautiful hill station is located at an altitude
of 4718 ft. above sea level, and is surrounded by beautiful valleys,
cascading waterfalls, exotic flora and fauna, ancient temples and
historic forts. Mahabaleshwar was discovered in 1829 and is called
the "Queen of Hill Stations".
Mahabaleshwar’s fauna includes lush
orchards of strawberries, as well as various types of continental
fruits and vegetables. Beekeeping is very popular. All year around,
irrespective of season, Mahabaleshwar runs to packed houses.
Taxis are easily available to get around, although bicycles and horseback are more widely used by visitors.

Mahabaleshwar is famous for its magnificent viewpoints, and in all there are around 30 such look out points. The most famous among them have been mentioned below.
Arthur's Seat Point
Arthur's seat point, 12 kms from Mahabaleshwar, is the most spectacular point, which overlooks a tremendous drop of 600 metres to the coastal strip of Konkan.
On the way to Arthur's point are the ancient Temples of Lord Shiva, 'Gau-Mukha' - Connected to a source of water. This is supposed to be the source of the five Deccan Rivers - Krishna, Koyna, Veena, Savitri & Gayatri.

Krishna valley
The Krishna valley depicts the beautiful calligraphy of
nature and is a beautiful location for nature explorers and fun seekers.
Panchgini
The other beautiful hill station in Maharashtra. Stay at Blue Country, Panchgini and enjoy the tranquility of this picture perfect locale. Panchgini, apart from its outstanding natural beauty, is famous for its education centres.
Venna Lake
The Venna Lake is a great attraction to everybody with its dazzling waters. Boating and fishing are very popular here. The lake is surrounded with a 'mela' atmosphere of food and game stalls. It is within walking distance from Mahabaleshwar town.
Pratap Gadh
At a distance of 25 kms from Mahabaleshwar stands the majestic Pratapgadh Fort. It was built by Shivaji in 1656, to control the rebellious Satraps of the surrounding Javali Basin. Legend has it that Shivaji was blessed with a shining sword by Goddess Bhawani here. This was also the site of the famous battle between the Maratha Chieftain Shivaji and the Commander of the Bijapur Sultante, Afzal Khan. The fort houses the tomb of Afzal Khan. There is a temple of Bhavani Mata, the idol of worship of King Shivaji. There is a statue of Shivaji Maharaj inside the fort called Bale Killa.

preserves and marmalades.
A must try is the American corn – more yellow
and softer than the regular Indian corn.
Another unique and delicious must try is ‘chikki’
– the Indian version of ‘stick jaw’ (basically
a peanut and jaggery sweet preparation)
– even better!
Try ‘chana’ along with a dash of spices.
This delicious preparation of green gram, roasted and unique to
this
location, is a treat for the taste buds.
The bazaars of this lovely hill station are bustling
and alive offering everything from clothes to slippers and gift
items.
