Shopping in Goa
For travelers to Goa, the visit is not complete unless they take back a souvenir of their memorable sojourn in this magnificent paradise. Naturally, shopping should be a priority on the itinerary of every tourist, along with the sightseeing attractions.
The excellent local handicrafts of Goa are easily the most popular souvenir items and include brassware, terracotta, shell work, crochet, carved furniture, bamboo work, papier-mâché, etc. These are available in the Government Emporia and also at shops and stalls near the popular tourist spots.
Another item which is on the list of every traveler to Goa is a pack of the famed cashew nuts. These are available practically everywhere. There are shops specializing in selling only cashew nuts. The nuts are available in a wide variety of tastes ranging from plain, salted and masala. The prices vary based on the quality and flavor.
There are also many fascinating options in the lifestyle and fashion shops which have come up in recent times. Some of these are located in fabulous old Goan houses which have been painstakingly restored. These shops make the best selections in home styling and fashion available to the tourists at quite reasonable prices.
It is also a fascinating experience to go around and shop in the traditional markets of the Goan towns and villages. These markets are a mirror of Goa's ethnic culture and provide a glimpse of the typical Goan way of doing business. Two of the most famous such market areas are Mapusa and Anjuna. The Friday Market at Mapusa, where stalls sell everything from curios and old coins to dried fish and spices.
Arts and Crafts of Goa
Arts of Goa
Goan art colorfully illustrates the unity in diversity of Goan heritage. Various art forms pertaining to different religious beliefs and life styles have mingled into one unique identity that has developed into Goan art. Thus one finds Hindu artists chiseling out Christian images in villages and cities. Goan art, developed around religious requirements, represents this process of assimilation, interdependence and mutual acceptability.
Goa is a proud place for lovers of Christian art as it houses Asia's first Museum of Christian Art at Rachol Seminary in Salcete Taluka. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation of Lisbon, Portugal has provided funds for the restoration of this treasure-trove of Christian art objects.
Crafts of Goa
Goa does not lag behind as far as arts and crafts are concerned and has turned out a good competitor in this creative field just like any other art enriched state of India. It can be said that art virtually runs in their blood, which is manifested, in many artistic crafts that have attained commercial proportions. They make excellent souvenirs for tourists. Goan handicrafts include Creative Pottery, Shell Work, Furniture, Brass Work, Bamboo Work, Papier-Mache, etc.
These items are crafted by professional artisans in their ethnic ambience, and also by artisans working at the arts and crafts complex run by the government. They are sold through various handicraft emporia and all major tourist spots.
The art and craft of Goa is the product of the aesthetic blend of Portuguese and Indian cultures. The crafts of the state are intricately beautiful, capturing the fancies of tourists and locals alike. These crafts can be at best described as a mirror of Goa's perennial glory and beauty and they have carved a niche for themselves by winning critical acclaim of the connoisseurs of the art world. LOCAL FESTIVALS
Go to Top

The rich culture of Goa is one of the most distinguishing assets of Goa. The culture of Goa comprises folk songs, lively dances, peppy music, seasoned cuisines and colorful festivals. The culture of Goa is an amalgamation the influence from all the communities that had ever lived in Goa.
Music flows in the blood of the people of Goa. Majority of Goan can play guitar or a piano with much ease. Much Goan music is derived from haunting and Portuguese love songs. The traditional dance and music of Goa has blended well with the more modern and chic dance and music of the West. Culture of Goa is reflected from the traditional dances including Fugdi, Dhalo, Kunbi, Dekni, Dhangar, Morulem, Zagor and Lamp Dance.
Culture of Goa is showcased in the fairs and festivals of Goa. The calendar of events of Goa is never empty. Shigmo, celebrated in the month of February and March, is celebrated just like Holi. The Feast of Our Lady of Miracles is celebrated 16 days after Easter. The Feast of the Three Kings at Reis Magos Cuelim and the Feast of St Francis Xavier at Old Goa are held in December every year. The Feast of St. Anthony held in the month of June marks the beginning of monsoon. Bon Carnival, the Mother of All fests, is celebrated all over Goa for three days in the month of February. Food Festival is organized in the month of November where you can taste and savour the authentic local cuisine of Goa for five days.
Goan Cuisine :

Traditionally, Goan food is cooked on clay pots and wood fire. In the Villages this is true event today. Fish & coconut are two ingredients which dominate the preparation. Fish curry & rice is Goa’s staple dish.
The Portuguese cooking has a strong and telling influence on Goan Cuisine and that should not be forgotten. Goan food is simple but one has to bear in mind that most, though not all, of it is chilly hot, spicy, and pungent.
A typical Goan would prefer seafood to all other meats and would use a lot of coconut for cooking. Being on the Konkan coast means that the Goan cuisine shares the spices grown in the region with the other states on the coast like Maharashtra and Kerala.
Goans find truly world-class prawns, lobsters, crabs, and jumbo pomfrets along the coastline and use them to make a variety of soups, salads, pickles, curries, and fries. An essential ingredient in Goan cooking is coconut milk made by grating the white flesh of a coconut and soaking it in a cup of warm water. Equally important is the ‘kokum’, a sour, deep red colored fruit that gives it a sharp and sour flavor. The famous red Goan chillies are also a must for most dishes, as is tamarind. Goans make their own version of vinegar from toddy.
