Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, is located on the west coast of the Peninsula of Malaysia. Covering some 243 sq km, it lies approximately 40 km from the coast. Kuala Lumpur -or KL as it is commonly called- lies in a valley surrounded by jagged hills. Kuala Lumpur was originally a mining settlement in the late 1800s where tin was discovered at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. Although KL's tin trade has declined since, the prosperity of the city has continued to grow.

Today, KL is home to 1.5 million people within the city proper, and more than 6 million in the surrounding metropolitan area. It is the political and cultural centre of the nation. Kuala Lumpur leads Malaysia's fast paced development in trade and commerce, banking and finance, manufacturing, transportation, information technology and tourism. Malaysia is considered one of the fastest growing countries in South-East Asia.

Kuala Lumpur has plenty to offer in terms of sights and shopping. Not to be missed is the Petronas Twin Towers at the heart of the city, one of the modern marvels of the world. The Towers are called Menara (Malay for "tower") 1 and 2, and until October 2003, they were the tallest buildings in the world. The towers are connected at the 41 and 42 level by a Skybridge. This is open to visitors on Tuesdays to Sundays from 8.30am to 5pm. At the foot of the towers, there is the superb KLCC shopping mall, offering branded items, superb eateries and several attractions such as the Petrosains Discovery Centre and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre) is easily accessible by taxi and the Light Rapid Transit train system.

Eating out in Kuala Lumpur is a real gastronomic adventure. There is such a diverse and rich variety of food that will excite one’s taste buds insatiably- spicy Malay food, endless variety of Chinese delicacies, exotic cuisine from North and South India as well as Nyonya, Thai, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese food, and irresitible seafood. Western cuisine is easily available apart from international chain fast foods. You have a choice of dining at hotels, cozy restaurants, the hundreds of roadside stalls and food bazaars catering for different budget and preference or a quick bite at any of the fast food outlets.

Popular Malaysian gourmet specialties include satay (marinated and barbecued meat, normally chicken, beef or mutton), nasi lemak (savoury rice steamed in coconut milk), roti canai (fried flattened bread), chicken rice and fried noodles. Meal prices range from 3 RM per person at a hawker stall to more than 300 RM per person in an expensive restaurant. There is a 5% service tax and 10% service charge added to the bill.

Here are some favorites of the different ethnic cuisines:

Malay- satay (barbecued meat on skewers), nasi padang(rice served with a variety of side-dishes), mee siam (spicy noodles) and nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk, served with fish). Sambal, a fiery chilli-paste often accompanies a meal.

Chinese - yaung tau foo (a dish of vegetables, seafood and meat-stuffed items), chicken rice (a fragrant dish of rice served with slivers of tender chicken) and laksa (noodles in a curry-like soup).

Indian - nasi beriyani (yellow rice cooked with spices and served with chicken or mutton) and paratha (Indian pancake eaten with curry). Dosas, Idlis and Wadas are popular South Indian vegetarian snacks.

NIGHT LIFE AND ENTERTAINMENT

Kuala Lumpur is a city that never sleeps, at least until the wee hours, with night spots pulsating to the rhythm of the night life. As KL comes alive in a blaze of multi-coloured lights when the night falls, there is always something to keep you entertained with the profusion of lively karaoke lounges, pubs with live bands and jazz, discos, cinemas and cineplexes showing contemporary English, Malay, Chinese, Hindi and Indonesian movies, theatres, night clubs, cabarets, bowling alleys etc. Local theatre groups regularly stage enthralling Asian and Western dramas, dance dramas and the bangsawan (traditional Malay opera). Or you may just take a stroll at the pasar malam, the local night street market, for worthwhile bargains.

At dusk, Malaysia reveals a new facet. Hotel lounges and clubs, frequently found within the larger hotels, are active at night. Although somewhat expensive, these clubs usually have entertainment on a nightly basis, excluding Sunday. Performances and styles range from jazz to piano acts and popular music.

Locating pubs and bars may require some effort as the these are usually situated in the suburbs where live-music is often played.Pubs close around 11pm, however, so late-night action seekers must look elsewhere. Discos begin to warm up just as the pubs start closing their doors and often stay open until 2am. Some have live bands and light shows but often require cover charges or drink minimums. Consult with the locals for the hottest spots. Nightclubs and cabarets, or "kelab malam" as the locals call them, offer fifties-style atmosphere, often with variety acts, floor shows and bands.
