Sangria

In essence Sangria is a red wine punch made in Spain and popularized in the US. It normally has red wine, brandy, and fruit. Fresh, fruity, delicious, Sangria can be made in any number of styles from spicy to mild to rich to bubbly: someone once said that there are as many Sangría recipes as there are Spaniards!

Ingredients
1 bottle Rioja (other red wines will do nicely too)
2 cups ginger ale
1/4 cup brandy
1/2 cup Triple Sec
4 slices orange
2 cups orange juice

Mix all together, and let sit in a fridge overnight. The next day, pour some over ice cubes and toss in a garnish of fresh fruit. Salud!

  Watermelon Whisper

(Watermelon Sangria,
Serves 8)

Ingredients
1 bottle red wine (preferably Spanish)
1/2 bottle white zinfandel
1/2 bottle Beaujolais
1/4 cup brandy
1/4 cup tequila
1 quart orange juice
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup lime juice
1 cup club soda
1 cup watermelon juice
6 star anise (optional)
Sugar to garnish
Sliced oranges, marachino cherries

Whisk all ingredients - wine, brandy, tequila, orange juice, lemon juice, club soda, watermelon juice. Add sugar, to taste. Garnish with sliced oranges, watermelon cubes, marachino cherries.

  Lemon Drop Martini

This is a very sweet and lemony drink that came into vogue during the 1970s in California. It is now a favorite drink of the West Coast.

Ingredients
1 1/2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce Triple Sec
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
Ice cubes
Superfine sugar for dipping
Twisted peel of lemon

Mix the vodka, Triple Sec, sugar, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice; shake well ( the cocktail is to be shaken 40 times to make sure the sugar is well blended). Pour strained liquor into sugar-rimmed martini glass and garnish with a twisted peel of lemon.

To create a sugar-rimmed glass, take a lemon wedge and rub the drinking surface of the glass so it is barely moist. Dip the edge of the glass into sugar.

Swirlin' Starfruit
(Starfruit Smoothie)

Originating in Java, Indonesia and prevalent in neighboring Malaysia, Carambola is grown in all regions of Thailand.

Starfruit are ripe when yellow and give slightly to pressure. The entire lemony fruit is edible. Just wash and slice - and the slices will look like stars!

Ingredients
8 ounces plain yogurt, drained
1 cup fresh orange juice
3 large star fruit
2 large mangoes, peeled and seeded

In a blender, purée all ingredients until smooth. Chill.
Makes 6-8 cups.

Starfruit smoothies also blend well with bananas and Cranberry juice.

  Virgin Mar
(6-8 servings)

If you crave the spiciness of a bloody mary but don't want the alcohol, try this tasty variation.

Ingredients
1 Q tomato or vegetable juice 1-2 t horseradish
1 T Worcestershire or soy sauce 1 oz lemon or lime juice
1-3 t tabasco sauce
1-3 t black pepper
½-1 t celery
Salt
Ice
Stir all of the ingredients together in the pitcher or bowl. Taste and add more horseradish, tabasco and/or spices as needed.
Chill and serve over ice. Garnish with lemon/lime wedges and a celery stick.
If you're interested in the alcoholic version, add vodka, taste, and adjust the seasonings.

  Kiwi Bonechiller

The flesh of the kiwi fruit is a brilliant green spattered with tiny edible black seeds.

Some say its sweet-tart flavor is reminiscent of pineapple, others say strawberry.

Kiwifruit blends well with apples, bananas, cucumbers, honey, Kirsch, lemon, lime, nuts, oranges, passion fruit, proscuitto, pineapple and strawberries.

Ingredients
1/2 cup mint leaves
2 kiwfruiti, unpeeled
8 ounces fresh pineapple
1/2 lime juice

Alternate the mint kiwi and pineapple through the hopper.
Then squeeze in the lime juice stir and drink.
