Poovar Island Resort, also known as Floating Palms, is situated in the southernmost part of Kerala, a 45-minute drive from Thiruvananthapuram,
the capital of Kerala. It is a place where time stands still and you are at
peace. It is a land of indescribable beauty with lush green vegetation, swaying coconut palms, endless golden sands where the blue sea meets green backwaters;
there is no denying that Kerala is really God’s own country. Nature is in its full
glory around here. Peace and tranquillity prevail, as there is no stress, tension or
pressure to meet the deadlines of our daily life. The resort has land and floating
cottages that are secluded to ensure maximum privacy and the rustic beauty of the
surroundings can be enjoyed from luxurious comforts. It has a sunken pool bar
and a restaurant called Tiffins that caters to every palate. In the evening cultural
programmes are arranged. Every land cottage has a hammock, where one can laze
with a book or soak in the ambient beauty.
The journey from Thiruvananthapuram by taxi to the ferry point takes about
45 minutes and from there on a motorised boat ride to the resort takes another 20 minutes. As the boat chugs on, one is
amazed by the vast expanses of water with palm trees lining the sides.

As soon as we alighted, we were taken to the reception desk. The staff was polite and courteous. As we downed our welcome
drinks (cool mango juice), a great sense of relief washed over us. We were then shown
to our rooms, which were done up in the Kerala style and were rather spacious. I
went for a relaxing and reasonably priced Ayurvedic body massage. The resort also offers boat excursions, visits to the
local fishing village, crab hunting on the backwaters, bird watching and sunset cruises among many other attractions for guests.
There are also regular sight-seeing tours to Thiruvananthapuram, Kanyakumari, Kovalam beach, Veli beach, Neyyar Dam,
Tripparappa waterfalls, Ponmudi and Cardamom Hills. The best souvenirs are gift articles made out of shells, Kerala papads,
sarees, and prawn pickle. We feasted mainly on meen (fish) curry, prawns and other authentic Kerala food. Overall, it was a brief
visit to paradise hidden.
