Reflex Action
S it back and relax, while trained hands work deftly on your feet or your hands, kneading away aches and pains from the right places without even being told. It may tickle at times, but more often than not, a reflexology treatment is a great way to unwind and de-stress.

According to reflexology, diseases, stress or wound can cause imbalances in the human body, which may block vital energy pathways, preventing the body from functioning properly. Reflexology can repair and restore the body’s natural equilibrium and encouraging healing. It serves as a balm for aching hands and feet. Reflexology is based on the theory that applying pressure on certain parts of the body can help to heal other problems too. Thus one treatment can combat stressrelated syndromes, backache, sleeping disorders, headaches, subfertility issues and hormonal concerns. More than anything else though, the feeling that envelops you as a trained reflexologist works away at your muscles is incomparably tranquilising.

Reflexology is available at many spas and high-end salons. A reflexologist will clean your feet and start massaging the pressure points on your feet and hand; the massage can take anything between 15 to 20 minutes and an hour. The therapist should understand the blockages in the body and release them. With regular use, the effect becomes apparent in the entire body.

There are many different varieties of reflexology
  • Standard or Ingham reflexology: Among the most common type of reflexology used, standard reflexology and zone therapy have a slightly different ethos. But if you went to see a therapist and didn’t know which you were receiving, you’d imagine that they were the same. Both are based on the theory of zones.

  • Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT): It’s carried out while standing or with one’s hands resting on a desk or book. Usually lasting for about 10 to 15 minutes, it heightens the effects of standard reflexology and may be useful for sportspersons and older people.

  • 5 Elements reflexology: It’s based on the Chinese principles of the five elements — earth, fire, wood, metal and water, and the theory of meridians running through your body. It aims to provide total healthcare and balance and covers nutrition too.

  • Morell Technique:This is an extremely light treatment.
Keep in mind

Reflexology is a relaxing and therapeutic experience, but certain precautions must be taken. Inform your therapist about any treatment or medication you may be on. Pregnant women should also be cautious about receiving such treatment. Instances like recent surgeries or injuries (like a broken ankle or arm) must be reported.

You don’t have to have squeaky clean hands and feet before a treatment. In fact, it is recommended that you don’t get a pedicure before the treatment as the hard skin can be an indication of imbalance.
