  • From the backwaters in Ashtamudi

    From the backwaters in Ashtamudi
The flight was long and longer than that was the car journey. But I had no clue that what was waiting for me at the end of the road. Welcome to Backwater Retreat, Ashtamudi, welcome to God’s country…

The sheer size and grandeur of the lake is so captivating that it took me a while to come back to my senses. After a warm welcome in true Kerala style we proceeded to our floating cottage and it left us speechless. The wooden flooring, the typical architecture, the dream sequence balcony and the spectacular view – water till the horizon.

  • A retreat in Ashtamudi

Kerala is well known for its inland waterways, spread out lakes, free flowing rivers and beautiful lagoons. One amongst them is the famous eight coned lake called Ashtamudi which gets its name due to its topography. Ashtamudi is the second largest wetland ecosysytem in Kerala after the Vembanad lake. With its eight corners, the lake is often referred to as the octopus.

Sight Seeing

Mata Amritanandamayi Ashram

1. Mata Amritanandamayi Ashram

Situated at Amrithapuri, Mata Amritanandamayi Ashram carries the illustrious legacy of being the residence and headquarters of Mata Amritanandamayi, one of India's great gurus. It lies close to Vallikavu, a pilgrim centre near Kayamkulam, that is a pleasure to visit and easy to get to. Special boats from Ashramam as well as frequent buses from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram to Kayamkulam, allow for a beautiful must-take journey.

2. Mayyanad Temple

The mystery and aura of Mayyanad lies in its many shrines and temples. The most distinguished of these is the Subramanya Temple at Umayanallor, which is said to have been consecrated by the great Hindu philosopher Sree Sankaracharya. Do visit this place and experience the beauty that is Mayyanad.

3. Sasthamkotta

Nestled within hills on three sides, Sasthamkotta is a sight to behold as the largest fresh water lake of Kerala. As a health resort and a centre of pilgrimage, this lake will keep you entranced. The ancient Sastha Temple, which gave the town its name, beckons one and all. Make the one-hour journey here. It is a memorable one.

4. Thangassery

History meets mystery in this picturesque seaside village. The ruins of an old Portuguese fort and 18thcentury churches grace the landscape of Thangassery. But what will hold your attention is the 144-foot lighthouse built in 1902. It stands as a sentinel, warning sailors of the treacherous reefs they will encounter as they come closer to shore. A charming place that you just shouldn’t resist visiting.
