    30 Kms from Almora, away from the crowded hill station, is the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, which is part of the Corbett National Park. The sanctuary is reputed to be home to over 300 species of birds, and is, therefore a haven for bird watchers and nature lovers. We recently made a visit to this beautiful part of Uttarakhand, and came away enraptured with the place. Come along with me as I visit Binsar and around.

Sight Seeing

1. Patal Bhuvaneshwar Tour

Steep green valleys to the Himalayan foothills fall below Patal Bhuvaneshwar. Beyond these lies a splendid view of the snow-capped mountains. Patal Bhuvaneshwar Tour takes visitors to a 6000-year old underground cave complex. Better known as the commune of the gods because of the 65 temples dedicated to different gods and goddesses situated inside the cave, this tour is a must take.

2. Bageshwar Baijnath Kausani Tour

Kausani soars at a height of 1,890 m above sea level, and is encompassed by dense pine forests, with a majestic view of the Himalayas. The tour takes one to the sangam of the two rivers Srayu & Gomati: Baijnath temple, where a variety of fishes grace the kund. It also offers a rich piece of Indian history, as Mahatma Gandhi spent a fortnight here when he was writing the Treatise Anashakti Yoga.

3. Gananath Tour

This tour takes visitors to the Mallika Devi Temple and Gananath Temple. The uniqueness that is the Gananath temple is that it is placed at a height of 2,116 metres above sea level. The tour route takes ones breath away, as it affords a view of the peaks of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandakhat, Bankatiya, Pancahachuli, Mactoli, Nanda Ghat, Nandakot, among others.

4. Meetha Reeta Sahib Tour

A Sikh shrine built at the confluence of Lodhiya and Ratiya River is where this tour takes visitors. Its history lies in Guru Nanak Dev’s visit and a spiritual discussion he had with the Gorakh Panthi Yogis.

5. Gangoli Hat Tour

The eminent Mahakali Shaktipeeth, believed to have been founded by Adi Guru Shankaracharya in the 8th century, is the main attraction of this place. With its presiding deity Goddess Kali, this town is a must visit.

6. Lohaghat Tour

Filled with mythological and historical importance, Lohaghat, lying on the bank of the River Lohawati, once was the cultural capital of the Chand dynasty. Vanasur Ka Tila is believed to be the capital of Demon Vanasur, once defeated in this very place by Lord Krishna. Mayawati Ashram is another place of significance for the place it holds in the spiritual journey of Swami Vivekananda.

7. Binsar Sanctuary Tour

Spread over 50 square kilometers and perched at a height of 7,913 ft. above sea level, The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the middle Himalayas near Almora and is a haven for wildlife and medicinal plants and herbs, a paradise for bird watchers and consists of the dense Oak and Rhododendron forest, along with marvelous views. Sunrises and sunsets can be enjoyed along with a vista that consists of the peaks of Trishul, Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba and Shivling.

8. Jageshwar Tour

One can take a walk through Shiva mythology thorough the Jageshwar Tour. A town about 65 kilometres from the resort, Jageshwar is nestled in a scenic narrow valley surrounded by magnificent Deodar trees. One of the most ancient and celebrated Shiva Shrines, the temple town possesses the 8th of the 12 Jyotirlingas. One can visit the temple of Lord Shiva located at 1,870 meters above sea level. The uniqueness of this town lies in its 124 temples situated in one compound, most of which are dedicated to the various manifestations of Lord Shiva.

9. Chaukori Tour

This tour is nothing short of a dream for every visitor. Immense Himalayan peaks, impenetrable forests and rolling tea gardens make Chaukori a fantastic place to be in. Berinag is 8 kilometres from Chaukori. The tea gardens here yield a very high quality of tea, along with a panoramic view of the Himalayas.

10. Katarmal Sun Temple

This temple (Bara Aditya) of Katarmal dedicated to the sun, is poetically situated at an altitude of 2,116 m. Its poetic magic begins with the 2-kilometre trek on foot across the River Kosi just to reach it. This is the only sun temple in the Kumaoni region and the second in India. Its poetic beauty continues in the magnificent forty three (43) subsidiary shrine-clusters that surrounds the main temple. A brilliant must visit.

11. Almora Tour

The Almora Tour covers a visit to the rustic temples of Kasardevi and Chitaigolu and a visit to the Nainital Dewal Zoo. One can also shop at Almora.

12. Nainital

The scenic Nainital invites visitors to tour the Kainchi Dham, Nainital town, the mall, the Nainital Zoo, Naina Devi Temple and the Tibetan Market. It makes for an exciting visit.

In Ranikhet on can visit the beautiful Chaubatia Gardens, the historical Kumaon Regiment Centre, the Museum Golf Course, Mankameshwar and Jhoola Devi Mandir.

14. Dunagiri Tour

The Dunagiri Tour offers a visit to Dunagiri Devi Mandir and Ktarmaal Surya Mandir, which is based at the River Koshi.
