Activities at Club Mahindra Derby Green, Ooty

stories

  • Monsoon in Ooty by Renuka Singh

There is something different about the ‘Monsoons of Ooty’. I visited the hill station with my family last year in July and it was the peak monsoon season there! When our bus was in close proximity of Ooty, we could see men and women ploughing the fields, children returning from the school and all sorts of daily tasks being carried out by locals. The moment we reached, soft drizzles of rainfall touched our faces, and it felt lovely!

  • A summer at Ooty by Poornima

I am visiting Ooty for the first time but I feel that I have been here before , realizing that it has been featured in several films of the ace Tamil director, Mani Ratnam quite extensively.

Sight Seeing

1. Blue Mountain Tour

This tour affords you a trip to Dodabetta Peak, the highest peak in the Nilgris. There are Botanical Gardens, which spread over 55 acres and house some of the rarest tree species, a vast range of ferns and orchids and the Ooty Lake, where you can enjoy some tranquil boating. A must visit.

2. Coonoor Tour

This Tour covers the Military campus, where you can take in the history that surrounds World War II. One will also visit the Golf Club, Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock, Dolphin Nose and the Tea factory. This makes for a very diverse trip.

3. St. Stevens Church Ooty

St. Stephen's Church is located on the road to Mysore. It is one of the oldest churches in the Nilgiri district. A painting depicting the Last Supper is displayed on the western wall, which is situated above paneled doors. The church also features stained glass windows depicting, among other scenes, the crucifixion of Christ and Mary holding baby Jesus in her arms. Instead of the usual bell in the tower, 4 hammer-like structures are tied on inverted-V shaped wooden planks using wires, which when pulled from the floor, produce a musical sound. It is a unique experience hearing the sound they produce. This church is a very stunning one to visit.

4. Botanical Gardens

This garden was laid out in 1847 by the Marquis of Tweedale and spreads like a lush blanket over 55 acres. Well maintained lawns, rare tree species (like the cork tree, which is probably the only such tree in India, the paper bark tree and the monkey puzzle tree - monkeys for some reason cannot climb this tree), a 20 million year old fossilized tree, an Italian-style garden bordering a clear pool, a vast variety of flowering bushes and plants in myriad hues (exotic and ornamental) and a fern house with a vast range of ferns and orchids, are some of the many highlights one can delight in at these gardens.

5. Charing Cross

Charing Cross is a junction on National Highway 67, intersecting the commercial road and the Ooty-Coonoor Road. It is considered to be one of the most important and beautiful places in Ooty to visit.

6. Rose Garden

The Government Rose Garden is the largest and most magnificent rose garden in India. It is situated on the slopes of the Elk Hill in Vijayanagaram at an altitude of 2,200 meters and makes for a very breathtaking visit.

7. Ooty Lake

The famous Ooty Lake stretches in an irregular 'L' shape, for about two kilometers in length and varying distances in width. At the far end is the rustic Boat House. During the summer boat races and boat pageantry are organized on two days at the lake. You can join the huge crowds that come for this. It is a fun trip.

8. Kamraj Sagar Dam

In the list of major Ooty tourist attractions, Kamraj Sagar Dam is definitely a prominent entry. The Kamraj Sagar Dam is also known as the Sandynallah Reservoir and it has always been a favorite picnic spot. The old towering trees and the serene location makes this a heavenly place to spend time.

9. Kodanadu's Viewpoint

Kodanadu's Viewpoint is one among the many important tourist attractions in and around the lovely Ooty. The panoramic view from the watchtower gives one the feeling of being on top of the world. The lush green tea gardens, the astonishing sunset behind Rangaswamy Peak, the majestic flow of the River Mayor sashaying through the hills are just some of the attractions that decorate the view from here. The viewpoint is an enthralling experience

10. Mudumalai Tour

This tour covers the Pykara waterfall and Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary, where wildlife can be spotted on an exciting elephant safari. One can also tour the forst in a vehicle instead.

11. Pykara & Tribal Village Tour

This Tour covers the Pykara Boat House, the Pine forest, shooting meadow and the Toda tribal village. Their unique customs and ways of living make this tour very interesting.

12. Avalanchi Tour

This tour covers the Toda Tribal Village, the Emerald Lake, the Badga Village, the Tribal Museum, Porthimund Dam and Lakdi Top. Different and varied locations with their own diverse beauty make for an enlightening journey.
