Activities at Club Mahindra Kumarakom, Kerala

stories

  • Floating away on backwaters by Anita Rao Kashi

All senses seemed to lapse into a beautifully lethargic state as a cool breeze blew across the face. The dull hum of the boat was almost hypnotic and as the boat moved further away from the banks, there was only water till the eye could see. For a moment it felt like I was on the high seas in calm weather, but I was, in fact,  on a lake – Vembanad – in the heart of Kerala’s backwaters.

  • A beautiful feeling called Kerala by Arti

Some places hold an inbuilt charm. They mesmerize your senses, they grab your attention, they fill you with tranquility and they sate you yet leave you hungry for more. If one were to prepare a list of them, Kerala, God’s own country would probably rate somewhere high up there, at the top. At least for me.

Sight Seeing

1. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Located 15 kilometres west of Kottayam Town, the rustic village of Kumarakom is on the eastern banks of the Vembanad Lake. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary covers 14 acres of land that was previously a rubber plantation. One can spot a large variety of birds such as night herons, purple moorhen, teals, egrets, waterfowls and Indian fruit bats among others. A must visit.

2. Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple

Built by the Thekkumkar Kings, this is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is believed to be about 5000 years old and has beautiful mural paintings on its walls that depict stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The annual Phalguna Utsav held every year in the month of March attracts thousands of devotees. Worth a visit.

3. St. Mary's Knanaya Church, Valiya Palli

The St. Mary's Knanaya Church or Valiya Palli (The big church) is situated quite close to the Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple. The church is dedicated to St. Mary, and its history begins as far back as 1550 A.D. when it was built by the successors of the Syrian Knanaya Christians who came to India in 345 A.D. The church has two granite crosses, which are carved out of single stones and bear a Pahlavi language inscription (The official language of the Persian Dynasty). The altar and the ceiling are adorned with paintings from the Bible

4. Thazathangadi Juma Masjid

Nestled on the banks of the Meenachil River, the Thazathangadi Mosque is an edifice in teak. The mosque, which is believed to be around a thousand years old, was constructed by Malik Dinar. The carved wooden roof, the bathing area, the beautifully patterned windows and the courtyard inside the mosque make it a must visit place.
