Food in Kumarakom

Kerala’s rich culinary traditions are well adapted and represented in the restaurant Nalukettu (traditional homestead in Malayalam) which serves a delicious variety of local dishes. It also serves a wide range of dishes from other cuisines. On request, the resort can also provide Jain food. As much as the scenic beauty will mesmerise you in Kumarakom, the food will also be a highlight of your Family holiday here. The simple, yet distinct Kerala cuisine might be more about rice and seafood, but the vegetables, fiery spices and coconut makes the vegetarian’s heart sing with joy too. The interesting combination of Hindu, Syrian Christian and Muslim traditions and influences gives the cuisine a nice, holistic touch. Whether it’s the dishes made from freshly caught fish and prawns, especially karimeen (pearlspot) fried or used in a curry or the delicious vegetarian gems, it’s food paradise! Accompaniments are either fragrant, fluffy rice, appam (delicately made hoppers or a kind of dosa), idiyappam (string hoppers or steamed rice noodles) and parotta (a layered and fluffy paratha). The significant Syrian Christian population’s influence is found in dishes like stew, meen moilee (fish in spicy yellow gravy), duck roast, beef fry and crab roast. Popular vegetarian dishes are sambhar, aviyal, rasam, errasseri, pachadi and more. All made with locally grown vegetables.

Festivals in Kumarakom

Among the most popular local festivals, the Vaikom Ashtami also called Vaikathashtami, is held during November-December at the Vaikom temple. It is unique festival as it celebrates Lord Krishna despite being a Shaivaite temple. The famous boat races held across the backwaters is anticipated by locals and visitors alike. In Kumarakom and surrounding areas, at least three sets of races are held during the period July-September. These are Kavanattinkara and Arpookara Vanitha Jalamela in Kumarakom and Thazhathangadi in Kottayam. Celebrated across the state, Vishu is the Malyali new year, which usually falls in April. The highlight is Vishukkanni which involves seeing auspicious things such as rice, vegetables, flowers betel leaves, coins, a mirror and other things on waking up in the morning. Lights, firecrackers and new clothes are part of the celebrations.

Activities in Kumarakom

When it comes to the activities, get an energetic workout as you go kayaking on the calm waters and get a different perspective of the lake. Rowing or drifting amidst the silence of the gently flowing water is a beautiful experience. It is fun and fulfilling to see things take shape before your eyes and the pottery making activity centre lets you get your hands dirty with clay while allowing you create things. Let the tranquil waters of the river Meenachil and of Vembanad lake soothe your senses on a boat cruise in the evening with the wind blowing to watch the glorious sunset. Places to Visit in Kumarakom

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a 14-acre sanctuary (open from 6.30 am to 6 pm) with lovely paths and manicured gardens. It is located just a few kilometres from the resort. It is known for migratory birds and has a plethora of winged creatures such as egrets, herons, cormorants, ducks and darters among others. The best time to visit the sanctuary is either early in the morning or at dusk. Vembanad lake is one of its kind in the country and looks more like the sea than lake. So you should go on at least one boat ride on the lake’s waters for a lovely and relaxing trip. Either gently drift along or hop around from one island to another. Head out for a picnic to the picturesque Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls, a must visit place in Kumarakom, located outside Kottayam where multiple streams of water cascade over rocks and fall from a height of over 100 ft.

Kottayam is known for two main churches. Kottayam Cheriyapally (small church) is dedicated to Mary and is actually called the St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church. It was built in 1759 by the Portuguese and is a mix of influences with galleries, pillars, cornices, pediments and murals. Valiyapally is also dedicated to St Mary and is believed to have been constructed in 1550. It is quite large and is famous for its two 8th century Persian crosses. The Thazhathangady Juma Masjid located on the banks of river Meenachil is considered to be among the oldest in the country and is believed to be 1000 years old.
