  • Strange, beautiful and surprising Nawalgarh by Anoop Padate

Im in hell I thought as I wiped the sweat from my face and lifted my camera to try for another picture of the peacock that was looking at me warily. Suddenly it froze. Something had caught its attention. And then I heard it too. This strange, sad, beautiful tune that somehow filled the air around me. And I forgot about the heat, the harsh light and the peacock that wouldnt let me take its picture. The music had me entranced. I walked zombie like till found where it was coming from. And I saw a man, sitting under the Khejri tree, playing an instrument that was making sounds that somehow got nature to orchestrate the perfect setting for it.

Sight Seeing

1. Anandi Lal Poddar Haveli

The only haveli in the whole Shekhawati, which has been restored by its owner, it was built in the 1920s and is a beautiful place to make a trip. It not only houses a school, but also has many fine paintings.

2. The Aath Haveli Complex

The main attraction of this complex is the eight havelis within it. This is worth a visit.

3. The Bazaar of Nawalgarh

The bazaar is an amazingly colourful place to revel in. It houses the largest number of havelis and showcases some of the most beautiful frescoes.

4. Dundlod

Dundlod is a tiny town right in the heart of the Shekhawati region. It is an interesting stopover against picturesque surroundings. The medieval fort of Mandawa gradually rises on the horizon like a mirage and dominates the town. Dating back to the 18th century, Thakur Nawal Singh founded it. A painted arched gateway adorned with Lord Krishna and his cows leads to the bazaar. A fine view of the town can be seen from the terrace of the Castle of Mandawa. Notable among the havelis are the Chokhani, Saraf, Goenka and Ladia havelis.

5. Mukundgarh

This town is one that is built around a temple square. One can shop for the local handicrafts, brass items and textiles and generally have a fun trip.
