Pondicherry, also known as Puducherry or more lovingly called Pondy, is beautifully perched on India’s Eastern coast and exhibits a charming amalgamation of Tamil and French culture, apart from offering a roiling mix of history and spirituality. How many times have you taken a vacation to South India only to realise that you missed out on the famous French Town and its exquisite cafes? Most of us visit Pondicherry for the beaches and the food.
However, we tend to almost overlook the experience that can become extremely fulfilling if one experiences the culture to its fullest, pays attention to the kind of people that travel and their ways of life. All this can become a part of your travel itinerary if you plan in advance and make the booking at the resort well in advance. Once that is out of the way, all you have to do is include these cafes in your list of places to visit when you pay a visit to French Quarter. And your trip will take on a new meaning altogether!
• COROMANDEL CAFÉ
This is one café in the centre of White Town that serves great food, has a boutique that sells fashionable garments and also has a bookstore. The food served is a mixture of European and French cuisine using good quality ingredients and presentation that is visually appealing. This quaint café is one that will transport you and your family to a distant land, the French touch is evident and the pink sauce pasta with goat’s cheese is not to be missed!
• MARC’S COFFEES
Marc’s coffees are available at two places, one Pondicherry and another branch in Auroville. The Pondicherry branch is right opposite the Promenade and sipping on hot cappuccinos as you bite into a croissant while looking over the sea, is a great way to spend the evening in French Town. You can always relax and go back to the resort for dinner. This ensures that you also roam around the city and take in its culture while staying at Club Mahindra and utilising its exquisite facilities like the spa, special meals and comfortable rooms. Giving you the best of both worlds!
• VILLA SHANTI
Another café in the French Town is Villa Shanti which is a little heavy on the pocket. However, a great idea to visit the place and yet not spend a huge amount of money is to have a nice meal at the resort itself and head out for dessert or a drink in the late afternoon. Take a walk by the promenade and settle down at this café for your evening cup of coffee or simply a frozen margarita or a glass of wine once you are done strolling along side the ocean.
• CAFÉ DE ARTS
With graffiti along the walls and a famous yellow coloured wall at the entrance of the café, this is a place right next to Villa Shanti which is famous for its crepes. The café is filled with interior décor items, beautiful paintings and a legendary bicycle that will have your children hooked to Instagram from the minute they enter White Town and this café.
• AUROVILLE BAKERY
Apart from the various cafes in Pondicherry, there are also two cafes in Auroville that are worth the visit when you pay a visit to the famous Aurobindo Ashram. Bread and Chocolate, a breakfast place is famous for its food. Auroville bakery has a great vibe and taking your children along to these places will be a fulfilling family vacation. The bakery serves delicious sandwiches, crepes and coffees. Make sure you plan your trip in advance and set aside 2 days to visit White Town and half a day for Auroville. Return to the Club Mahindra Puducherry resort and indulge in a spa or a massage. Wander around the property or simply lounge on the beach as you soak in the sunset and your children engage in fun games like volleyball, paintball, etc. Do read some Club Mahindra reviews online for further information on Club Mahindra resorts.
