At Club Mahindra, sustainability is more than just a word. It's not like we can take a vacation on another planet (yet), therefore it makes sense to care for the one we've been blessed with. Which means we need to work doubly hard, making certain changes and sacrifices while at the same time ensuring the luxury and comfort of our guests isn't compromised.

As we celebrate the 22nd of April as World Earth Day along with the rest of the planet, we'd like to make it known that we are keen on providing our guests with happy and wonderful memories. But we also want to nourish and take care of our resorts, the land and the environment at the same time. Here's what we're doing when it comes to sustainability at our eco-friendly resorts.

Committing to Better Energy Efficiency

MHRIL is India’s first hospitality company to join the ranks of the global RE100 and EP100 Initiatives. The RE100 initiative brings together influential businesses that are committed to 100% renewable electricity, by 2050 at the latest. Companies who join this initiative set public goals to completely source their electricity consumption from renewable sources and disclose their electricity data annually.

We have also pledged to join EP100 – an energy campaign, that works with businesses to commit to doubling their energy productivity and to maximise the output from each unit of energy used. One part of our EP100 pledge includes the Cooling Challenge, where we will monitor the efficiency of our Air Conditioning systems, then using that information we will implement more efficient energy solutions. Under EP100, we also plan to shift entirely to Electric Vehicles by 2030 for any internal transport in our resorts.

We’re also committed to becoming Carbon Neutral by implementing practices and technology that do not release any carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In 2016, we committed to reduce our Green House Gas emissions by 83.3% per room, by 2031. It's an uphill task, but we can get there together.

The above efforts aren't namesake measures that make for good press. They mean every time you flip a switch, lounge around the cool confines of our resorts or take a cart to play a round of golf, you aren't a part of the global energy crisis. If anything, being part of the Club Mahindra family shows that you are committed to being part of the solution.

So What Changes Can You Expect at Club Mahindra Resorts?

Only positive ones. Change does take time, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t already begun. Our promises and pledges have already taken root at many of our resorts. Here's where you can see our clean and green technologies in action

Solar Energy: Presently, 7 of our resorts function entirely on solar power. They harness the power of the sun to make your vacation comfortable and fun. The resorts are Tunghi, Kanha, Kumbhalgarh, Jaisalmer, Puducherry, Udaipur and Hatgad. Club Mahindra Kanha is actually India’s first 100% solar powered resort.

Electric Vehicles: At Varca and Tungi, we run all our internal and external movements through Electric Vehicles. At Cherai, Poovar, Ashtamudi and Jaisalmer, all internal movements are taken care of through Electric Vehicles.

Zero Waste to Landfill: While were working to make our inputs ecologically sustainable, we cannot ignore the output of waste we generate. Our goal is to divert this waste away from landfill, as a large part of greenhouse emissions that cause global warming from the methane rising from decomposing biowaste at landfill. To that end, our resort in Virajpet is now India’s first Zero Waste to Landfill resort, with a 99.32% waste diversion.

Water: Currently 6 Club Mahindra resorts do not purchase water from any external source but are entirely self-reliant for their water requirements. These include Corbett, Gir, Kanha, Naukuchiatal, Madikeri and Virajpet. 20 Club Mahindra resorts also have Rainwater Harvesting structures in place.

Organic Gardens: We believe fresh produce nourishes our guests’ minds, bodies and spirits. With that in mind, we have set up organic gardens at our resorts in Munnar, Kanha, Corbett, Poovar, Manali, Cherai, Dharamshala, Kandaghat, Thekkady and Mahabaleshwar. They supply the kitchens with produce in its best natural form, providing nourishment that lets our guests live their best lives.

As part of our commitment to staying ecologically and environmentally conscious, we’ve also conducted 2 biodiversity assessments at Virajpet and Madikeri to determine key areas of conservation. This ensures not just our resorts but also the surrounding areas make progress together. It's just who we are as a company, and if we can do it, so can you at home and in your community, in your own way.

Our commitment to sustainability has been recognised and awarded by several organisations and governments. But at the end of the day, the fact that we've had a positive impact on the community we serve, is a reward in itself and the only one that matters.

We hope our guests, both existing and prospective, take away a few of these simple practices in addition to the memories they make at our resorts. Seeing how travel and leisure are the last things on everyone’s minds with the Covid-19 pandemic, it is our hope that all our guests and partners stay indoors. Sustainability is a way of life and you can be sustainable at home and in your community, not just while you're on vacation. We wish you a safe and sustainable Earth Day 2020 and look forward to hosting a new, sustainable you once this crisis ends.
