Jaipur figures on the must-visit list of many travellers – and with good reason. A charming city full of historical splendour, it is worth a lengthy sojourn. This article presents a guide on travelling to Jaipur in the best way.

Here’s how to reach Jaipur using different modes of transport:

How to Reach Jaipur By Air

Going to Jaipur by air is often the best way to travel to the Pink City. There are several direct flights from metro cities, and many connecting ones from other locations as well. So figuring out how to reach Jaipur is not such a tough task. The city’s Sanganer Airport is located about 10 km from the city centre. Once you land at the airport, you can book pre-paid taxis at the designated counters, or take a cab outside the airport to reach your hotel or resort. Alternatively, you can ask your resort to send you a cab but be sure to communicate all travel timings first.

- All major Indian and many international airlines ply to Jaipur every day. There are daily direct flights from foreign destinations like Sharjah, Dubai, Kaula Lampur and Muscat as well. The international flights arrive at Terminal 1 and domestic flights at Terminal 2. You must factor these points in when figuring out how to reach Jaipur by flight.

- There are daily direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi to Jaipur. If you are travelling from another city that is close to either of these metros, then you should consider breaking your journey into road journey to Mumbai or Delhi, followed by a flight to Jaipur. This will save travel time.

- Flights on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon (between 3 pm and 4 pm) cost less and are relatively less crowded as well, except during festive times and the tourist season. Decide how to reach Jaipur in the least possible time and cost when planning your holiday.

- You can expect to pay between Rs 200 and Rs 250 for prepaid cabs from the airport, and about Rs 100 to Rs 150 for autorickshaws. Be sure to haggle with the autorickshaw drivers before you jump in.

How to Reach Jaipur By Road

Some people prefer to travel to Jaipur by road. But knowing how to reach Jaipur using the best road or highway is crucial. Road journeys entail driving down in your own car, or booking a private car, or taking a bus. The NH8, NH11 and NH12 all connect to Jaipur.

It is easiest to drive to Jaipur from other parts of Rajasthan, and Agra and Delhi. If you are arriving from other places, we suggest that you fly to Delhi and take a direct flight to Jaipur from there, or fly to Agra, Bikaner, Jodhpur or Jaisalmer and then drive to Jaipur. For those who wish to drive down to Jaipur, please note these roads and distances from the above mentioned cities:

Agra to Jaipur: approx. 237 km, via NH11

Delhi to Jaipur: 281 km, via NH48

Bikaner to Jaipur: 335 km, via NH11

Jaisalmer to Jaipur: 556 km, via NH11 and Jaipur-Jobner-Kuchaman-Nagaur Rd

Jodhpur to Jaipur: 338 km, via NH25 and NH48

If you wish to take a private bus, you can book tickets on non-AC deluxe buses or AC Volvo buses. There are a fair few Rajasthan State Transport buses run by the RSTRTC to and from Jaipur daily. If you are within Jaipur and wish to go to other cities from there, then you can take a bus to the Sindhi Camp or Narayan Singh Circle and catch long distance buses from there.

How to Reach Jaipur By Train

Travelling to Jaipur by train is easy and convenient. We recommend a railway journey as a preferred option after flying to Jaipur.

Jaipur has 3 railway junctions. These are located at Durgapura, Jaipur Main and Gandhinagar.

These three junctions are well connected to all major railway terminuses in India, like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Agra, Bhubaneshwar and Ahmedabad, to name a few of many.

The major trains of India, from the Shatabdi Express to other Express trains, ply regularly to Jaipur. Please check the train schedules for your hometown to get the best train and timings suitable for your journey.

The Palace on Wheels, India’s most luxurious train starting from Delhi, also has a stop at Jaipur, among other Rajasthani cities like Jodhpur, Udaipur, etc.

There are daily trains from Delhi and Mumbai, to Jaipur. We suggest flying from your hometown to either of these cities (which is close) before taking the train journey to Jaipur.

Things to do in Jaipur

Expect to see a lot of forts, gardens, museums, public squares, even a hilltop observatory and a bunch of old stepwells in Jaipur. The city is steeped in history and the Government has taken pains to maintain most of its historical landmarks to this day. You should make a detailed itinerary of places to visit in Jaipur based on the season, number of days that you are staying in the city, distances between your resort and the points you wish to see (and distances between different points, too), weather conditions, and so on.

Some important points to note before you set off for Jaipur

Now that you are planning a Jaipur holiday, do bear in mind the following points before you start booking your tickets and Jaipur resort:

The best time to visit Jaipur is after the monsoon season ends and before the winter sets in earnest. This leaves a shorter window of opportunity than you would like, i.e., the end of October and early December. However, the weather in Jaipur is as close to perfect during this time as you can wish. Once you block your dates, you can use weather monitoring apps like Accuweather to find out predicted day-time and night-time temperatures, precipitation, fog conditions, visibility, and so on. This knowledge will help you plan your itinerary without last minute surprises.

However, though this is the ideal time to visit Jaipur, you must be warned that it is also the most crowded time of the year in the Pink City. You will find that it’s not just about how to reach Jaipur at the right time, but also how to best utilise your time there. You won’t mind the crowds at most tourist points, but there may be long queues at others. One way to beat the tourist rush is to leave for sightseeing as early in the morning as you can – ask your resort to pack your breakfast and leave at about 6 am.

We’ve already mentioned the ideal time to visit and how to reach Jaipur, but other visitors will also be visiting during this time. Jaipur sees a high tourist influx from both domestic and international visitors. This means that you will have to be quite canny when booking your tickets and accommodation. Book early to avoid last minute price hikes – the closer you book to your departure date, the lower the choice of seats and airlines. Tickets are also priced higher. The same applies to booking a car or bus for your road trip to Jaipur – operators normally charge more for last-minute bookings.

Here’s a good tip to get lower ticket prices: plan your Jaipur holiday during the off-season - monsoon or summer. Ticket prices are normally the lowest during the monsoon season (June to the end of August). Meanwhile, the summer season is quite harsh in this desert city. Hence, although the crowd is less, you must be prepared for blazing hot sunshine and extremely dry air. Stock up on sunblock cream, ointment for rashes and skin burns, tablets for stomach upsets, and clothing that covers your limbs completely. A sun hat is essential when visiting Jaipur during the summer.

If you are driving down to Jaipur, be sure to check if your car insurance is valid, motor oil, tyre pressure and brake fluid levels are adequate, and the car is serviced and outfitted for a long drive. Some of the national highways are not in the best of shape during the monsoon season, so your car will have to be in good condition to deal with the bumpy terrain.

The best places to visit in Jaipur are those that match your interests. Be prepared to take frequent history lessons because the city is full of old palaces, forts and gardens built by erstwhile rulers like the Rajputs, Mewars, Mughals and later, the British. However, there are plenty of opportunities to catch up on the culture and nightlife as well. Seek places that offer rooftop dinners from palaces, or visit bazaars in the evening to eat street food, enjoy street performances and music, and also shop for unique local items.
