Coorg or Kodagu is a picturesque hill station in the southern state of Karnataka. Known as the foremost coffee hub of India, this destination boasts verdant landscape, amazing trekking routes, fragrant coffee and spice plantations, and a variety of birds and animals, to ensure you and your kids have a gala time. For those who would like to add a tinge of piety to their itinerary, there is the Bhagamandala Temple, which is one of the must-see places to visit in Coorg. It is one of the most pious spots in Coorg and must definitely show up on your list of things to do.

Location

Bhagamandala Temple is located about 33 km outside Madikeri, the district headquarters of Coorg. It can be easily reached by hiring a taxi or jeep from Madikeri or Virajpet. The nearest airports are at Mysore and Mangalore, and the closest railway station is at Mysore.

Significance

Situated on the banks of the confluence of three rivers, Cauvery, Kannike, and the sub-terrain Sujyothi (commonly referred to as ’Triveni Sangama’), is this holy temple. It is a common place for Hindu pilgrims to take a dip in the confluence to wash away their sins before proceeding to Talacauvery, which is the source of River Cauvery. It is a nice place to teach your kids about mythology and is one of the must-visit place in Coorg. There is the Sri Bhagandeshwara temple, a famous sacred spot near Triveni Sangama, with shrines dedicated to Bhagandeshwara (Ishwara), Subramanya, Mahavishnu, and Ganapati. This has been said to have been built by the Cholas in the 11th century and it’s a good place to introduce your kids to the architectural styles of those times.

During the period from 1785-1790, the area was under the reign of Tipu Sultan who named it Afesalabad, before King Dodda Vira Rajendra regained control of it again. Now, that is some interesting history that you can teach your kids too!
