Wayanad is a trekker’s paradise. And if you are one trekking enthusiast, a holiday in Kerala must include some time spent in Wayanad. Situated in the heart of the Western Ghats and known for being one of the most picturesque places in the state, Wayanad offers some incredible trekking opportunities. Want to explore the great outdoors? Wayanad is your ticket.

This quaint district in God’s Own Country boasts of a topography that makes it an ideal place for adventure activities. Trekking is one of the most popular things to do in Wayanad and once there, you’ll know exactly why.

There are several places to visit in Wayanad. However, if you are a nature lover and enjoy trekking, here are three locations you cannot miss:

1. Chembra Peak – This famous peak located at a height of 2100 metres, the highest in the state, is visible from all the corners of Wayanad. Trek through verdant grasslands and thick forests to stumble upon the heart-shaped lake on your way to the misty summit.

It takes about 3-4 hours to trek up a distance of about 10 km. It’s rated as a moderately difficult trek and better suited for those who are slightly experienced. If you’re an amateur, do seek help from local guides.

Note: You need to obtain permission from authorities before going on this hike.

2. Banasura Hill – Another popular spot is the Banasura Hill, also the second highest peak in Wayanad. Make your way to the summit through steep slopes, knee-high weeds, and rocky paths.

From the top, you can enjoy breath-taking panoramic views of the scenery, which almost seems endless combined with the beauty of the Banasura Sagar Dam.

It takes a few hours (5-8) to trek for 12 km to reach the peak. This trek is a difficult one, be warned.

3. Pakshipathalam – If you enjoy bird watching, Pakshipathalam will be heaven. This hill is home to several rare species of birds. This avian haunt is situated at a height of 1740 metres and as you trek here, take in some incredible sights.

There are many caves en route you can explore. It’s a 16 km trek that will take nearly eight hours. It’s best suited for those who are moderate to enthusiastic trekkers. If you’re an amateur, you can trek to the watchtower, which is at a distance of two km to enjoy the 360-degree stunning views.

Note: You need to obtain permission from authorities before going on this hike.
