5. Kangra Fort

Covering an area of 463 acres, Kangra Fort is one of the most massive forts in the Himalayas and the eight largest in the country and should be a part of the things to do in Dharamshala for every tourist.

It is believed that Maharaja Susharma Chandra of the Katoch dynasty built this fort. After the Kauravas, who he fought for, were defeated in Mahabharata’s final battle of Kurukshetra, Susharma Chandra came to Kangra with his soldiers instead of heading to his capital in Multan. Soon Trigarta came under his control, and the fort was built to protect his kingdom.

Kangra Fort is situated atop a hill in Dharamshala that rests at the base where two rivers–the Patal Ganga and Banganga–meet.

The fort’s history reveals that several rulers had their eyes on it and wanted to seize control. Earlier, it was believed that if you wanted to rule Kangra, you had first to gain control of Kangra Fort. High walls and ramparts protect the fort for nearly four kilometres with many darwazas (doors) built by various conquerors.

The main entrance to the fort is the ‘Ranjit Singh Darwaza’, through which you will reach the ‘Jahangiri Darwaza’. This further leads to the ‘Andheri Darwaza’ and the ‘Darshani Darwaza’. This door opens up into lush courtyards which has several chambers built around it.

The prime attractions of this Dharamshala fort are the Sitlamata Temple and Lakshmi Narayan Temple. Although a portion of the temple was destroyed in an earthquake, there are still exquisite carvings for you to see. Ambika Devi Temple is another temple to the north of these two temples. Till today, this temple is a place of worship. There is also a mosque from Jahangir’s era, and nearby, there is the Kapoor Sagar, a marvellous stone stepwell.

One of the things to do in Dharamshala is to take the staircase between Ambika Devi Temple and Sitlamata Temple, to reach the Sheesh Mahal. Go all the way up to the terrace for some amazing views of the surrounding area.

9. Stroll Through Tea Plantations

The tea plantations are situated on the gentle slopes of the Kangra Valley. One of the oldest and most famous tea companies here is the Dharamshala Tea Company, the establishment behind three very popular estates in Kangra Valley–Hoodle, Mann and Towa. Pick up their famous black and green tea with variants such as Hyson, Fannings, and Pekoe, among others. Often, Kangra tea is compared to the world-famous Darjeeling tea. This tea is unique and has an earthy flavour. However, what sets it apart is the nutty and citrusy flavours that come with a pinch of fresh bitterness. The most popular variety sold here is the green tea, and for quite some time, Kangra used to be the primary source of green tea to Russia, West Asia and Central Asia. Some tea connoisseurs even consider this tea the best in the country, and it could probably be so thanks to the climate and the locals’ expertise to grow it. Another favourite of visitors is the oolong tea, a speciality of this plantation. Oolongs are hand-crafted, hand-rolled and come with a creamy, smooth flavour complete with an oriental kick! One of the best things to do in Dharamshala is to take a walk through the region’s tea plantations. If you are a tea lover, then you have to visit the sprawling tea plantations in Dharamshala. 10. Explore St. John’s Church

You will find St. John’s Church amid tall deodar trees and cedar trees nestling in the wilderness, which it earned the name 'Church in Wilderness'.

This Gothic place of worship dating back to 1852 is dedicated to Saint John and uses the Neo-Gothic architectural style. It is one of the oldest cathedrals in the north of India, making a visit here one of the things to do in Dharamshala. It was rebuilt in 1905 after the tower was destroyed by an earthquake. Today, it stands as one of the few reminders of the British Raj.

As you enter the premises, the coniferous and pine trees will catch your attention. At times you might even see horses grazing here in the morning. Look around the church, and you will spot the graveyard where some notable people were laid to rest. One of the most distinguishing factors of the church is that it is made entirely of stone and its muted colours are enhanced by its beautiful stained-glass windows. These windows were donated by Lady Elgin, as the graveyard on-site is the resting place of her husband.

Close to the church, you will also find a memorial dedicated to Viceroy and Governor General of India, Lord James Bruce. After he passed away in 1863, Lord Bruce was buried close to St. Johns Church and Mary Lousia, his wife, built a beautiful memorial in his remembrance.

Since the church is located at the height of nearly 5700 feet above sea level, the views from here are stunning. This monastery is one of a kind because of its practice of tantric meditation. This, coupled with the calm and quiet of the place, make it an ideal place to de-stress.

Best Time to Visit: The monastery is open to visitors throughout the year but Buddha Purnima is the best time to visit. It is beautifully decorated and a cultural show is put up on this occasion.

16. Yoga Lessons

While Rishikesh remains the popular haunt for yoga in the country, its possibilities in Dharamshala are being explored. 17. Dal Lake

Situated around 8 km from the main market of Dharamshala, Dal Lake can be easily reached by taxi. Its splendid beauty makes it second only to the iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar.
