Why You MUST Visit Srinagar's Tulip Festival 2021
Neatly stacked rows of tulips of various colours with their bulbs popping up like small, brightly-coloured heads. A sight so steeped in innocence, that it draws a smile from the innermost recesses of your being. Such a sight awaits you at the Tulip Festival in Srinagar, held every year at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, also known as Siraj Bagh. In 2021, the Tulip Festival will be held from 25th March to 30th April. You should visit the festival not just if you happen to be an anthophile, tulip lover and nature lover, but also because it’s a wonderful opportunity to get a glimpse of the rich culture, cuisine and crafts of Kashmir, all of which will be on display during the festival.
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, also known as Siraj Bagh, is the largest tulip garden in Asia, spread across almost 74 acres. It is stretched out leisurely on the foothills of Zabarwan Range (a sub mountain range between Pir Panjal Range and Great Himalayan Range) on the banks of the fabulous Dal Lake. The garden is home to over 60 varieties of early, mid and late blooming tulips, although other species of flowers like hyacinths, ranunculus and daffodils have been added over the years, thus enriching its richness.
The Tulip Festival in Srinagar is celebrated every year in the month of April, with the arrival of the spring season. It is held to showcase the rich collection of over 60 varieties of tulips, and is an unmissable event if you are a nature lover. The festival, which seeks to promote tourism in the state, also has several cultural activities on offer that provide a glimpse to visitors of its rich culture and traditions.
In 2021, the Tulip Festival in Srinagar will be held from 25th March to 30th April 2021.
The main attraction of the Tulip Festival in Srinagar is the vast collection of almost 15 lakh flowers belonging to more than 64 varieties of tulips. It is believed that the Floriculture Department planted more than 15 lakh tulip bulbs during the winters of 2020-2021, and the results of that are there for everyone to see.
The Tulip Festival will also consist of musical evenings which will see the participation of local and national artists. About 25 stalls will also be set up to showcase the culture, crafts and cuisine of Kashmir. A live exhibition of handloom and handicraft products will also be organised. The Hari Parbat Fort, which is situated atop Hari Parbat and is visible from the Tulip Garden, will also be illuminated on the occasion.
You can also try various delicacies of Kashmir and take away souvenirs as memories at the stalls and kiosks which will be set up just outside the garden.
