Why You Need To Experience Kerala During Onam At Least Once

Of the many celebrations in Kerala, the secular harvest festival of Onam is perhaps the most important. The dates of Onam vary but if you’re planning on going to Kerala during August or September, it’s something you shouldn’t miss. The entire state is a riot of colour; with pookalams (floral decorations) adorning the entrances of not just homes but also shops, hotels, and hospitals.

Traditional art forms can be seen everywhere, and people dress in their best attire. Women bring out gold jewellery for the occasion as they prepare to welcome Mahabali, the legendary king of Kerala! Trust us; there’s no better time to visit Kerala than during Onam.

So why is Kerala a must-visit during this festival? Here are some compelling reasons:

1. Athachamayam

This day heralds the beginning of this amazing ten-day festival. In olden times it was customary for the King of Cochin to travel with his entourage to Thripunithura fort – an occasion for the common people to greet the king and see him up close. There’s no king these days but the procession retains its majestic charm. If you are in Cochin you will be mesmerised by the street parade that proceeds from Thripunithura to Thrikkakara temple.

2. Thrikkakara temple

You can go to Thrikkakara Temple at any time of the year, but visiting it during Onam is ideal. Known to be one of the most ancient temples in Kerala, it is especially beautiful at this time of the year. Don’t miss the first and the last days of the festival – there’s a plethora of music, dance, and other traditional cultural events.

3. Onasadya (feast)

If you want to experience the best of Onam in Kerala, you should make a beeline for the sadya or traditional feast. Usually vegetarian, the various dishes constitute a medley of delicious flavours, from savoury starters to sambar-and-rice to payasam (dessert). The banana leaf on which the food is served is a sign of purity and humility.

4. Boat race

Enjoy the magnificent sight of chundan vallams (traditional snake boats) compete for pole position during the time of Onam, and you wouldn’t want to leave the place. Vallamkali (boat race) is a part of the traditional festivities. The boats are decorated with flowers and the air is charged with excitement as people come together for the competitions.

You must have figured by now that Kerala is a fantastic place to be in during Onam. The festival is a huge attraction for people from all over the world, who come to the state to witness this joyful celebration of culture and history.
