Watched over by mighty snow-capped mountains, nourished by flowing rivers amidst a pristine pine forest, and cloaked in mist, the Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim could conjure up one of two things in your mind; either a centre of prayer, meditation, and Buddhist philosophies or the setting of an epic Kung-Fu movie starring Jackie Chan! Thankfully, it is the former, a place for those seeking the solace of the mountains and inner peace. Visit the Stunning Rumtek Monastery when you stay at a Club Mahindra resort in Sikkim. This should be on your list of things to do in Sikkim. After all, there’s no other place quite like this when it comes to attaining inner peace and tranquillity! Did you know that it is also the largest monastery in Sikkim?

Also known as the Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre, the Rumtek Monastery is the seat of the Kagyu order of Buddhism. Moreover, it is the historical seat of the third highest monk in Tibetan Buddhism named Karmapa Lama. It was founded in the 1960s by His Holiness, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, the spiritual leader of Kagyu Buddhists worldwide and is an exact replica of the original headquarters in Tibet, which was destroyed during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The impressive monastery, which is almost the size of a tiny village, is also home to the Golden Stupa which holds the remains of the founder - the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. The best time to visit the stunning Rumtek Monastery is during the months of May and June when the Tibetan New Year or Losar, is celebrated. During this time the usually peaceful and quiet monastery erupts in a celebration of life, with dances like the Gutor performed by monks wearing traditional masks, taking place. Winters and the monsoons render Rumtek inaccessible so plan your trip accordingly.

For a holiday filled with solace, accompanied by soothing chants and silk paintings of mandalas fluttering in the breeze, Visit the Stunning Rumtek Monastery.  While this might not be an exciting or adventurous destination, it is fulfilling at a different level. Put down your phone and pick up on the tranquillity that Rumtek Monastery exudes.
