A holiday in the sun is delightful, of course. But have you ever experienced a raincation i.e., a vacay in the rain, before? It’s romantic, adventurous, thrilling, peaceful, joyous, sentimental, active, calm – all at once!
Come rain or shine, Club Mahindra curates the most spectacular family trips. And this blog will take you to a gorgeous little nook in God’s Own Country.

Most travellers prefer to hunker down and stay put during the pitter-patter of the monsoon season. A hot beverage plus a good book makes the idea of home seem absolutely irresistible. But there are a few who wish to experience the breath-taking beauty and inexplicable thrill of the rains. After all, it’s a time when nature is at its most riveting.
For those families who crave novelty with a sprinkling of familiarity, we present a trip to Club Mahindra Thekkady, Kerala! Discover a green, hilly resort nestled in the picturesque Western Ghats. Built in local Kerala style architecture and surrounded by exquisite pine, teak and redwood trees, this charming property comes alive during the months of June, July, August and September. Misty clouds come floating down to greet you. Crystal dew drops coat everything, from petals to (window) panes. The pit-a-pat sound of the rain creates the best music. A perfectly enchanting atmosphere for a family vacation, wouldn’t you agree?
The best part is, this holiday destination offers an array of signature experiences that can be savoured during the monsoons. For instance, have you ever gone swimming while there’s a light shower overhead? It’s like a rain dance party! Now, for the outdoor expeditions. From a scenic boat ride in Periyar Lake, to a refreshing trek to Paranthapura Waterfalls, to an exciting safari journey through Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, expect nothing but magical monsoon moments.
As one of the most glorious national parks in all of South India, the Periyar National Park reigns over the Western Ghats proudly. The rich, bountiful land stretches for nearly 500 square miles, cutting across dense forests and extending around the banks of a large artificial lake. Did you know, this pristine water body is 100 years old?
Apart from the peaceful atmosphere and post-card worthy surroundings, the park is world famous for its resident elephants. These cuddly giants put on quite a show during the cool, dry months. In fact, herds of wild elephants can be seen spending their time in the water. Other majestic species include the wild pig, mouse deer, barking deer, Indian bison, and Indian wild dog. Last but not the least, the bold and beautiful tiger.
Now, most travellers take to the water and prefer to explore the park from the Periyar River itself. Cruises depart throughout the day via a large ferry boat or a bamboo raft. This is a great way to soak in the scenery as well as spot exotic flora and fauna. In addition to a river cruise, you may also hop off the boat and spend some time trekking through the forest floor in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. This way, you have a better chance of spotting wildlife. Additionally, camping is also permitted in the park, but only as part of an overnight trekking excursion, like the Tiger Trail.
The best time to visit the park is during the cool, dry months of October to February, because activities like river cruises, trekking, and camping are weather-dependent. That being said, the months of June to September offer a new perspective. A brighter, fresher, greener perspective! Unlike most wildlife sanctuaries in India, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary remains open during the monsoon season. And so, families can unlock nature’s best kept secrets during this time. For instance, the fragrance of the moist vegetation gives the park a special appeal. So, inhale deeply and savour the aroma. Also, keep your eyes wide open because the foliage takes on richer shades of green. It’s like getting wonderfully lost in an emerald universe. Lastly, make sure to take advantage of the light drizzles by going for long, lazy walks; it’s idyllic.
Note, the monsoon season comes with its own set of challenges. But with our handy tips, you will be weather-ready. Firstly, we’d recommend carrying water-proof clothing. Secondly, footwear with a firm grip. Thirdly, bug spray. Fourthly, a 1-litre water bottle. Apart from your attire and sustenance, make sure to follow the instructions of Club Mahindra’s knowledgeable and friendly guides who will ensure you have the most fun time.
Travel to Club Mahindra Thekkady for a magical monsoon holiday!
