When it comes to divinity, there’s no place quite like Uttarakhand, a hilly state in North India. Known as ‘Devbhumi’, or the ‘land of the Gods’, its landscape is adorned with several temples, perfect for those looking for a spiritual getaway. Add to this, the mysticism of the mountains and it’s a match made in heaven. There are several places to visit in Uttarakhand, but none quite like its temples. According to Hinduism, one of the major pilgrimages for salvation that one can embark on is the yatra of several important temples. It’s also a great way to introduce your children to faith and worship, while they are also having fun on family vacations!

Here is a list of the must-visit temples of Uttarakhand:

1. Kedarnath Temple

This temple is located in Rudraprayag and is one of the major holy centers dedicated to Lord Shiva. When it comes to spirituality, this is one of the most important tourist places in Uttarakhand. Its location, at 3,584m at the source of River Mandakini and surrounded by snow-clad peaks, adds to the mystic aura that you are sure to enjoy on your family vacations. If you aren’t up for the 14km trek, there are ponies, palanquins, and helicopter services available.

2. Tungnath Temple

Believed to be the resting place for the hands of Lord Shiva when He was against the Pandavas, this scenic temple has something for everyone. Whether you are a pious worshipper, nature lover, or adrenaline-loving trekker, Tunganath offers you something to do, making sure visits to this place during family vacations here are never boring!

3. Katarmal Sun Temple

This is a ninth century temple built by a Katyuri King, Katarmalla. It displays typical architecture of ancient artists of India and is perched at a height of 2,116 m. It can be accessed easily from Almora and is considered to be the second-most beautiful shrine in India after the Konark Sun Temple.

4. Santala Devi Temple

Surrounded by forests in Dehradun, this temple is devoted to Santala Devi and her brother. It’s one of Uttarakhand tourism’s major draws. The legend goes that during their fight with the Mughals, Santala Devi and her brother realised they couldn’t go on any longer and so, they laid down their weapons and prayed. Suddenly, a light shone through the darkness and they were converted to idols.
