As the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic slowly subsides  in India, air travel restrictions should begin to ease. If you plan to travel by air once the situation improves, there are certain safety-related pointers you should keep in mind.

Travelling away from home may seem challenging in these times. We at Club Mahindra hope that the following air travel tips address your concerns.

6 things to know about air travel during the Covid-19 pandemic

Tip #1—Check the restrictions on luggage weight and permitted items

One of the most important things to know about air travel is that airlines charge for extra luggage. So, if you are travelling with heavy baggage, make sure to weigh it to ensure it does not exceed the maximum limit. Also, airlines have become strict about the personal items you’re permitted to carry, so confirm what is and is not allowed.

Tip #2—Carry sanitiser in your check-in luggage

While most airlines claim that their aeroplanes are thoroughly sanitised, it is best to maintain cleanliness at an individual level too. Keep a bottle of sanitiser and a packet of disposable wipes to clean off your seat, armrests, and trays before settling down in your seat.

Tip #3—Wear masks allowed by the airline

Airlines may require a specific type of mask to be worn while flying. For instance, a makeshift mask made from a scarf is unacceptable for air travel.

Tip #4—Take the emergency exit aisle seat

If you are not assigned a seat on your aeroplane, and you don’t mind sitting in one of the emergency seats, ask the person at the boarding desk to give you the one in the emergency seating area of the aircraft. You’ll also have plenty of leg room there.

Tip #5—Take neck pillows to give yourself a good time to rest

While trip planning, bring a neck pillow with you for the flight. Many airlines allow you to bring only two personal items as you board the plane. But if you wear the neck pillow around your neck during boarding, it is not counted as an additional item. Plus, it will ensure a restful flight.

Tip #6—Keep travel apps handy

Travel apps give you access to all the information you need about and during your travel. Download the airline’s app for trip planning and keep yourself updated on flight information, boarding passes, gate information, etc., while travelling. Also, know about the weather and the COVID-19 pandemic situation at the place you are going to. When travelling within India, you’ll also need to have the government’s Aarogya Setu app installed on your phone.

While air travel can be the safest and fastest way to travel, keeping these small things in mind can help you stay safer in these trying times.
