World Environment Day is an initiative by the United Nations, and it is celebrated annually on June 5th. The primary objective of the day is to create awareness among the citizens worldwide to protect our environment. It aims to encourage individuals to take action to preserve planet earth.Â
The UN created the World Environment Day in 1972 during the United National General Assembly conference in Stockholm, and World Environment Day was first observed in 1974 with the theme ‘Only One Earth.’ Since then, the day is celebrated in various host nations. In the US, the WED was first recognised in 1974.Â
This year in 2024, the government of Sweden will host World Environment Day, and it marks its 50th anniversary. At the 2022 WED meet in Stockholm, Sweden, more than 150 countries will be participating. The UN will engage the different governments, schools, celebrities, and corporate entities from these nations to create awareness about and encourage them to undertake environmentally friendly activities.Â

Every year the UN has a different theme for WED. The theme for 2024 is Solution to Plastic Solution. Under the theme, World Environment Day 2024 will be observed by highlighting the need to live sustainably in harmony with nature by creating transformative policies and making smarter choices towards achieving a cleaner and greener environment.Â

Many NGOs and non-profit organisations conduct cleanup activities. You can sign up as a volunteer for such a cleanup drive and do your bit to save the environment. A small contribution by many can create a huge impact.Â

One of the best things to do on environment day is plant a tree in your locality. Trees provide food and oxygen, and they help clean the air.Â

Make it a habit to use bicycles instead of bikes or cars at least two days a week.Â

Water is a valuable natural resource; it is vital for survival. Make sure that you turn off the tap correctly after cleaning vessels or taking a shower. Every drop you save counts!

While you take small steps to preserve our environment, you can also educate people about the importance and value of our natural resources and how they can contribute. You can conduct eco-friendly activities for the kids to help them learn while having fun.Â

Instead of using the regular bulbs in your home, you can replace them with LED lights that are more energy-efficient and help you reduce your monthly bills. Also, make sure to turn off the lights and other appliances when not in use.Â

Please avoid using single-use plastic bags. Instead, carry our own cloth or paper bags to the market. Instead of buying water in plastic bottles, you can take your bottle and refill it when necessary.Â
Protecting our planet start with you, so on this world environment day, take a pledge to help save nature and take the above steps.Â
