Visiting Ladakh in Summer (April to June)

Ladakh is at its absolute best during the summer season between April and June. It is also the best peak season when you can find plenty of tourists flocking in from all over the world. This is when the snow starts to melt gradually after the harsh winters, and the weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging between 5-7 degrees Celsius.

April is the best month to visit Ladakh if you are travelling on a budget. At this time, you can get to see the shades of white all over the place, and you can even experience snowfall, especially near the high passes of Khardung La and Chang La. By late April, the snowy white starts to give way to greenery all around, creating a brilliant display of colours.

By early June, the popular tourist spot Rohtang Pass opens up for tourists, and the weather becomes even sunnier. If you are visiting Ladakh at this time, make sure that you take care of your kids and adults and wear warm clothes and appropriate footwear. The melting snow can make the roads slippery, but if you tread carefully, you will enjoy seeing the most spectacular sights you may have seen anywhere in the world.

Visiting Ladakh in Monsoon (July to August)

After bright and cosy summers between April and June, the weather and landscape of Ladakh undergo a significant change, and the monsoon slowly starts to set in. By the end of July, Ladakh starts to experience irregular and sometimes heavy rainfall.

This is not the best time to visit Ladakh. The incessant rains make the roads extremely slippery and unsafe to drive on or walk over. Also, landslides are a common sight across Ladkah when it rains. You can face many obstructions along the way, which may ruin your mood and holiday experience.

Visiting Ladakh in Winter (September to February)

After the rain recedes, the winters take over, and the chill slowly starts to build from September. If you have always wanted to experience visiting a cold place and seeing snow, winter is the best season to visit Ladakh. By the end of October and mid-November, Ladakh is freezing with cold, and most parts get covered under the thick snow blanket, especially the places that are over 14000 ft above sea level.

During this time of the year, most roads Leading to Ladakh, including the Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways, get closed due to heavy snow and ice formations. However, if you brave the harsh weather and feel confident about beating the cold, you can visit one of the most popular lakes in Ladakh, the Pangong Tso lakes to see its changing colours throughout the day. It is one of the top-rated attractions here. It is also a great time to trek over the snow-laden mountains and walk over the frozen Zanskar River, which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
