Cradled by the walls of the invincible Mehrangarh Fort lies the second largest city of Rajasthan, Jodhpur. Built in the early 1900s by Maharaja Umaid Singh, Umaid Bhawan Palace was the royal family’s residence. It draws heavily from both British and Indian architectural philosophies. A part of the palace has now been repurposed as a heritage hotel under the Taj Group and the remaining part functions as the residence of Maharaja Gaj Singh’s family. The premises also house a museum with collections of vintage cars, weapons, trophies, and clocks and banners, some of them a gift from Queen Victoria.

Jaswant Thada was built in the in the 19th century in memory of the 33rd Rathore ruler of Jodhpur, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The cenotaph is in the shape of a temple made with intricately carved marble sheets, radiating a warm glow under the sun. This is the official crematorium of the royal family who still resides in the city. Portraits of various former rulers of Jodhpur are on display in its inner sanctums.
