Also known as the ‘Pink City’, Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur has an abundance of architecture, history, and folklore running through its veins. It is the perfect place to experience the old-city charm and marvel at the magnificence of a bygone era.
When you’re there, expect to see elements of opulence and exoticness at every turn. From magnificent forts to lavish palaces to bustling bazaars, Jaipur has a bit of everything for the perfect family vacation!
Here’s a list of ten places to visit and things to do in Jaipur while on a family vacation.
1. Hawa Mahal in Jaipur
An architectural marvel that stands tall and faces the main thoroughfare of old Jaipur, Hawa Mahal’s distinctive appearance make it a formidable, yet familiar sight. The structure was built keeping in mind the science of ventilation; air circulates through the entire building thanks to its multiple windows and vents, earning it the name ‘Hawa Mahal’.
Tip: Combine a trip to Hawa Mahal with other sights such as Jantar Mantar, the City Palace, and the nearby markets.
Entry fee: Rs 50
Timings: 9 AM to 4.30 PM, all days
2. Jantar Mantar in Jaipur
Jantar Mantar literally means ‘calculating instrument’. Like its counterpart in Delhi, this ancient observatory was used in bygone times to observe and record heavenly phenomena. Of the 14 structures placed around the manicured garden, each has a specific astronomical function. The shadow cast by the sundial is almost the length of a person’s arm. One part art and one part science, Jantar Mantar offers kids a chance to find adventure in Jaipur.
Entry fee: Rs 50
Timings: 9 AM to 4.30 PM, all days
3. Amber Fort and Palace in Jaipur
To witness something truly out of a fairy tale, make your way to Amber Fort on the outskirts of town. This impressive fort displays the brilliance of Rajputana architecture. As you walk along the halls, palace rooms, and gardens, the skill of the artisans can be clearly seen in the delicate mosaic work, ornamental pillars, ivory and sandalwood motifs, latticework, and frescoes. While you are there, Maota Lake and the surrounding hills are a sight to behold. The light-and-sound show held in the evenings is another attraction.

Jaipur has many bustling markets and shops where one can find unique and traditional Rajasthani items such as clothes, jewellery, curios, etc. For jewellery and gemstones, head to Johri Bazaar. Jootis, textiles, and perfumes can be found at Bapu Bazaar. Stone carvers, gem cutters, silversmiths, puppet makers etc. are dispersed through the city. Looking to buy souvenirs? Check out blue pottery, jewellery, bangles, and textiles.

Other newly opened attractions include a sculpture park, a wax museum, and a restaurant/café.
