Diwali, or Deepavali, is one of the biggest festivals in India, celebrated by people from all walks of life. Meaning “row of light” in Sanskrit, it is a festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. The festival also has historical importance for Sikhs as the Sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind Singh was freed from Gwalior Fort on this day in the 17th century.

With Diwali around the corner, it can be the right time to go on a shopping spree to buy your Diwali essentials. So, how about making a Diwali shopping list so that you don’t forget anything? Besides, the list may help you allocate the proper budget to every item to have a smooth shopping experience.

Diwali Decoration 

Decorating the house can be an integral part of the Diwali celebration for many people. They like to decorate their house to give it a festive makeover during Diwali. Some others might see it as an opportunity to bond with family members as the entire family can be involved in the decoration exercise.

You can include designer Diyas, Torans, Rangolis, Diwali Hanging Lanterns, etc., in your Diwali decoration list.

Paints & Wallpapers 

If you were thinking of painting your home or a part of it, Diwali could be the right time. Fortunately, there is no shortage of colours available today to choose from. So, choose the colour that best suits your taste and give your home a paint makeover. 

Alternatively, you can also consider different wallpapers to give a creative lift to the old walls.

New Clothes 

Now, this is one age-old custom followed in many Indian Households. Diwali means shopping for new Diwali outfits and showing them off at family gatherings. So, purchasing new clothes for yourself and your family members is one of the important Diwali Essentials you can’t ignore.

Home Appliances

During Diwali, many shopping malls and sites provide great discounts on various products. Therefore, it may be the ideal time to buy some essential home appliances and give your kitchen a new look. For example, you can consider purchasing a refrigerator, microwave oven, or other new-age energy-efficient appliances. 

Moreover, this can be the ideal time to replace some of your old Kitchenware with new ones.

Sweets 

Diwali is also the time to indulge in some Diwali special sweets. Apart from homemade preparations like Halwa, Gujiya, and Kheer, people also buy sweets like Burfi, Laddoo, Jalebi, etc., from the friendly neighbourhood sweet shop. 

So, consider including at least 2-3 different types of sweets and dry fruits in your Diwali Essentials shopping list. After all, you may want to play a good host to the visiting guests by welcoming them with a mouthful of sweets.

Fire Crackers 

Most people have fond memories of their childhood bursting firecrackers with friends on Diwali night. It’s time to pass the legacy to your kids. Green crackers are less polluting with lesser health risks as they are manufactured from eco-friendly raw materials.
