Diwali, or Deepavali, is one of the biggest festivals in India, celebrated by people from all walks of life. Meaning “row of lights” in Sanskrit, it is a festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. The festival also has historical importance for Sikhs as the Sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind Singh was freed from Gwalior Fort on this day in the 17th century.

With Diwali around the corner, it is the right time to go on a shopping spree to buy your Diwali essentials. So, how about making a Diwali shopping list so that you don’t forget anything? Besides, the list may help you allocate a proper budget to every item to have a smooth shopping experience.

Diwali Purchase List

  • Diwali Decoration

Decorating the house can be an integral part of the Diwali celebration for many people. They like to decorate their house to give it a festive makeover during Diwali. Some others might see it as an opportunity to bond with family members as the entire family can be involved in the decoration exercise.

Thus, the must-have item in your Diwali shopping list should be Diwali decoration. You can include designer Diyas, Torans, Rangolis, Diwali Hanging Lanterns, etc., in your Diwali decoration list.

  • Paints & Wallpapers

If you were thinking of painting your home or a part of it, Diwali could be the right time. Fortunately, there is no shortage of colours available today to choose from. So, choose the colour that best suits your taste and give your home a paint makeover.

Alternatively, you can also consider different wallpapers to give a creative lift to the old walls.

  • Curtains

The role of curtains in a home’s interior can often be understated. Good window or door curtains with great designs can complement your home’s interior and improve the overall aesthetics of a room. They can be elegant and soothing to the eyes.

So, consider including them in your Diwali shopping list. You can also include bedsheets, sofa covers, and a net set of table mats on the Diwali purchase list, too.

  • New Clothes

Now, this is one age-old custom followed in many indian households. Diwali means shopping for new Diwali outfits and showing them off at family gatherings. So, purchasing new clothes for yourself and your family members is one of the important Diwali essentials you can’t ignore.

  • Home Appliances

During Diwali, many shopping malls and online shopping websites provide great discounts on various products. Therefore, this festive season is the ideal time to buy some essential home appliances and give your kitchen a new look. For example, you can consider purchasing a refrigerator, microwave oven, or other new-age, energy-efficient appliances.

Moreover, this can be the ideal time to replace some of your old kitchenware with new ones.

  • Sweets

Diwali is also the time to indulge in some Diwali special sweets. Apart from homemade preparations like Halwa, Gujiya, and Kheer, people also buy sweets like Burfi, Laddoo, Jalebi, etc., from the friendly neighbourhood sweet shops.

So, consider including at least 2-3 different types of sweets and dry fruits in your Diwali essentials shopping list. After all, you may want to play a good host to the visiting guests by welcoming them with a mouthful of sweets.

  • Firecrackers

Most people have fond memories of their childhood bursting firecrackers with friends on Diwali night. It’s time to pass the legacy to your kids. However, ensure that they are safe and not causing too much sound pollution. It is advisable to buy green crackers. Green crackers are less polluting with lesser health risks as they are manufactured from eco-friendly raw materials.

  • Ornaments or Jewels

Jewellery and ornaments are an integral part of Diwali, not just for personal adornment but also as popular gifts. During your Diwali shopping, you can purchase gold or silver coins. Many families purchase gold or silver coins embossed with images of deities like Lakshmi and Ganesh. These make for a traditional and meaningful gift as well.

You can include jhumkas, bangles, anklets, and necklaces in your Diwali shopping list. Antique or temple jewellery goes very well with the ethnic attire that is typically worn during the festival.

  • Ornamental Platters or Trays

If you're hosting a Diwali celebration, consider getting ornate platters or trays to serve sweets and snacks. Many of these come with intricate designs, gemstones, or gold/silver plating.

  • Jewel-studded Idols

Small idols of Gods and Goddesses, adorned with semi-precious stones, serve a dual purpose during Diwali. Initially, they add a divine and luxurious touch to your Puja ceremony. Post-celebration, these elegant pieces transition beautifully into keepsakes or decorative items in your home, elevating your overall Diwali decoration.A little indulgence is not bad, especially when it’s Diwali. So, finalise your shopping list and start purchasing your Diwali essentials one by one until you tick them all off.
