Our bodies and minds require equal care. But sometimes it can feel like a monumental task to ensure one's wellbeing, especially in the age of COVID-19, where bad news is pouring in from everywhere. The only way to cope with this difficult time is by taking care of one's mental and emotional health. Here's a guide on staying mindful and keeping away from the toxicity during COVID-19. These mental health tips are easy to implement and will ensure you don’t neglect any aspect of yourself.
A healthy, balanced routine is key to fostering a peaceful and happy atmosphere at home. Every member of the family should focus on getting the basics right in order to maintain good mental and physical well-being. The first thing to ensure is 7-8 hours of sleep every night. A well-rested mind will be better able to cope with the stresses of the day, be it work or school-related.
Next, is ensuring a nutritious diet consisting of a mix of carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Make sure to drink a minimum of 1.5 litres of water through the day to keep hydrated and flush out the toxins. Don’t skip meals, especially breakfast.
Exercise is another integral piece of the routine. Whether it’s a walk around the block, a cycling trip, or a relaxing yoga regimen, bust a move! Refer to our blog on simple yoga exercises to master during COVID-19.
COVID-19 has forced us all to shift to a virtual world. Between office calls, online classes, virtual meet-ups and games nights, screen time is taking priority above all else. Hence, it’s important to unplug and recharge your own battery every once in a while. One of our mental health tips is to take a complete detox from devices once in a while. Phone, computer, laptop, tablet, gaming console, smart speaker…just put all technology aside!
Whether you choose to do it every evening or just on weekends, make sure to set some time aside for activities like reading, painting, journaling, cooking, dancing, singing and exercising. You can also do simple things to keep your mind away from the toxicity like sitting by your window/balcony/garden with a cup of coffee. Fatigue and burnout can be instantly alleviated by simply putting away the electronic gadgets and focusing on the present. Take a deep breath and 'centre' yourself.
This is a tried and tested method of relieving anxiety, stress or depression. Reach out to someone – a family member, a friend, a neighbour, a mental health professional. If it is your child who needs a little extra assistance, a school counsellor might be helpful. For yourself, consider contacting a therapist or availing of a company-facilitated therapist. However, if you wish to keep it low-key, just confide in a person you are comfortable with.
Acknowledging your feelings is the first step to getting better; expressing them is the second step; and dealing with them is the third. Of course, everyone is fighting a battle of their own. So, while you seek solace in some, make sure to lend a shoulder to others. Pay the kindness forward. We, at Club Mahindra, believe in the power of building a support system.
If not a person, why not pour your feelings into a journal? Put pen to paper and write down your fears and insecurities. Make a list of all the things you hope to overcome and all the things you hope to achieve for the coming year. While this may seem like a childish task, it’s actually a great way of releasing negativity and channeling inner strength. Some believe that if you tear a piece of the journal and put it under your pillow, wishes come true! Whether it’s magic or just the power of faith, journaling works miracles if you believe in it. Remember, it’s important to take stock of all your emotions before it gets the better of you.
Try this as a simple family exercise where you get your kids and partner to journal for just 15 minutes every evening. Not only is this a wonderful trick to becoming more self-aware, but it also helps improve those vocabulary skills. A win, win!
Try these COVID-19 mental health tips at home, and let us know if it has managed to work for you and your family.
