The Chenab Rail Bridge, touted as the world’s highest rail bridge, is set to welcome train services in the coming months, marking a significant milestone in India's infrastructure development.
Situated in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, the bridge soars 359 meters (1,178 feet) above the Chenab River, surpassing even the height of the Eiffel Tower. Constructed as part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, the Chenab Bridge is designed to withstand severe seismic activities and high wind speeds up to 260 km/h, showcasing engineering prowess and resilience. The bridge spans a length of 1,315 meters, incorporating a steel arch structure that ensures stability and durability amidst challenging geographical conditions.
As per reports, the Northern Railway has announced that the train service from Ramban to Reasi to pass over the world's highest railway bridge very soon. Each side of this mammoth structure measures approximately one-fourth the size of a football field. Around 30,000 metric tons of steel were put to use in the construction of the Chenab Rail Bridge. The building of the bridge costs a whopping 14,000 crore.
This engineering marvel has been a feat of meticulous planning and execution, involving over 1,300 workers and 300 engineers. The project faced numerous hurdles, from the treacherous terrain to the harsh climatic conditions of the region. However, with advanced construction techniques and unwavering determination, the bridge was completed, earning its place in the annals of civil engineering.
