Sustainable Development Goal 3 or SDG 3 seeks to ensure good health and overall well being of all, at all stages of life. The goal addresses the major health concerns faced by people worldwide and assures access to safe, quality and affordable healthcare, medicines and vaccines to all. The goal also emphasises on more research and development and increased funding in the healthcare sectors for health risk reduction and management.

At the heart of the UN's functioning is the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals), which are urgent action plans for all nations. There are 17 SDGs and the SDG 3 focuses on good health and wellbeing of global citizens.  

The UN recognises that good health and overall well being is a fundamental human right and the wellbeing of the citizens is vital to the nation’s development. Poor health hinders children’s growth, limits equal economic opportunities for men and women, and increases poverty within communities.  

The SDG 3 has certain global goals to achieve through contribution and collaboration from all countries. These goals are specifically created to promote health and wellbeing for all. Let us look at what these targets are? 

  •     Reduce the global maternal mortality rate to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. 
  •     End all the preventable deaths of newborn babies and children under five years worldwide by 2030.  
  •     By 2030, put an end to epidemics like malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS. Also combat water-borne diseases, and other communicable diseases worldwide.  
  •     Reduce the premature deaths due to non-communicable disease by giving the patients appropriate and timely treatment.  
  •     Prevent and strengthen treatment for substance abuse, including alcohol and drugs. 
  •     Provide access to sexual and reproductive health care services to all by 2030. Also, integrate reproductive health into national healthcare programs and strategies.  
  •     Substantially reduce the number of illnesses, and death caused by soil, water, and air pollution and hazardous chemicals.  
  •     Strengthen the implementation of World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Council in all countries.  
  •     Improve the capacity of all countries, especially developing nations, for early warning, risk reduction and healthcare management systems.

While the United Nations and the governments across the world are doing their bit to improve citizen’s health and promote wellbeing, as an individual, you too must share the responsibility and take necessary steps every day to keep yourself healthy and fit. To stay healthy and fit, you must monitor your health regularly. Make health check-ups a routine. This will help you know about your blood pressure, sugar level, dental health, etc and you can address any underlying issues immediately before the issue becomes serious.  

Change your lifestyle

Lifestyle habits are the biggest sources of many physical and mental ailments. If you have the habit of smoking, drinking alcohol, or substance abuse, you must stop these practices immediately and abstain from it. If you need, seek help, or therapy.  

Manage stress
