Halwa is a common sweet dish in India. There are different types of halwas in India that are made from different ingredients like coconut, carrot, pumpkin, bottle gourd, pineapple, and more. While most halwas are sweet, there is one unique halwa that tastes sweet, and slightly tangy, it is called Tomato Halwa.

Made with fresh tomatoes, dollops of ghee, and sugar, tomato halwa is easy to make, and a delight to eat. Also, making the halwa requires no fancy techniques. Rich in colour with glossy texture, tomato halwa looks like Karachi halwa, except it does not involve using any flour.

About Tomato Halwa

While the exact origin of tomato halwa is unknown, it is widely believed that it has existed in the south, especially in Tamil Nadu for a long time. Known as Thakali Halwa, the dish is typically made with fresh tomatoes, but some recipes also use tomato puree and canned tomato pulp to get a smooth texture. The natural tanginess and the sweetness of the tomato lends the dish its flavour, and you can adjust the sugar content as per your preference.
