Karnataka has a rich food culture. The local cuisine, replete with delicious curries, soulful dosa preparations, and scrumptious sweets, has something for everyone. One such sweet dish that is not as popular as Mysore Pak or Dharwad Peda but is a delight to eat is Thambuttu. 

Thambuttu is a simple sweet dish. It is basically a ladoo made of grounded rice, jaggery powder and ghee. The dish is usually made during festive occasions like Puthari, a harvest festival celebrated in December.

As per the local tradition, Thambuttu is made using the rice from the fresh harvest and it is first offered to the Lord as a mark of gratitude for the excellent harvest and seek the blessings of the almighty.

Ingredients needed for Thambuttu Recipe

  • Basmati rice
  • Cardamom powder
  • Jaggery powder
  • Ghee

How to make Thambuttu Recipe  

  • Dry roast the basmati rice in a frying pan until it turns golden brown.
  • Ground the rice into a coarse powder.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients - the grounded rice, jaggery powder, ghee and cardamom powder.
  • Make small balls out of the powder like ladoos and Thambuttu is ready!

Originating from the Coorg region, Thambuttu holds a special place in the Kodava culture as it is prepared from the new rice of the season. Traditionally, it is made with ripe bananas, roasted sesame seeds, grounded rice, grated coconut, and ghee. The dish is highly nutritious and the locals, especially children love it.
