What’s the one thing most parents are always worried about? Studies, of course!
Academics plays an essential role in the mental, physical and social development of any child. It’s where he/she gets to make new friends and learn new things. Also, while children are at school, it provides a window for parents to run errands, housework and get some free time to themselves.
But with the steep rise in the spread of COVID-19, it was a rather hasty decision made by most countries to temporarily close schools and colleges to prevent the spread of the disease. With the coronavirus lockdown implemented everywhere, teachers have had to revise the curriculum and make everything available online. Parents have had to now don the role of a teacher too to home school their children and help them keep up with their schoolwork.
Times are uncertain and there is no guaranteed way of knowing by when things will get better or go back to normal. What’s more, with schools and colleges shut, children are at home all day long. It can get overwhelming for parents to cope with these changes and figure out a new ‘normal’ for every member of the house. It is completely okay to feel overwhelmed considering everything is happening so fast and you are still coming to terms with it, let alone take in the more recent and new developments in the coronavirus pandemic situation.

As much as possible, chart out a schedule for kids to follow during the week. Have some short-term goals set in place for each to achieve by the end of the day or week. Remember, the current situation of coronavirus lockdown is difficult for everyone so following a routine will help normalise the situation. Agreed, it is going to be difficult in the beginning to adjust but try to stick to this schedule as much as possible.

While following a homeschooling schedule is essential to help kids keep up with their schoolwork, there are other forms of learning that can take place around the house. You can teach kids about gardening and conduct easy and fun science experiments to teach complicated concepts in simpler terms. Get kids involved in cooking and other household chores that can teach them about certain topics that they may not be able to learn at school. Also, try and incorporate some physical activities for kids to stay active as well as break away from the monotony of sitting down and studying.
Don’t forget - stay home and stay safe!
