1) Thrissillery Shiva Temple - Places to Visit in Wayanad

Opening and closing time: As per the forest department rules, only 200 persons are allowed to trek to Chembra peak on any given day. Therefore, it is recommended to start early in the morning around 07:00 AM.

6) Thirunelli Temple

One of the most ancient temples in Kerala, the Thirunelli Temple at an altitude of 900 metres in north Wayanad is dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu. Similar to Thrissillery Shiva Temple, only males are allowed in the inner sanctum with bare body above the waist. Women, however, should be dressed fully with their head covered.

Talking about the history, it’s a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and was built in the 9th century AD. As per historians, the Thirunelli temple was once a major pilgrimage hub and an important town during the era of Tamil Chera King, Bhaskara Ravi Verma I (962 - 7019 CE). There is documented proof that reveals the ruins of two ancient villages around the temple. The Thirunelli temple also gets a mention in the ancient Hindu religious texts called Puranas and local folklore. The Puranas mention the Thirunelli temple as a magnificent temple with unmatchable beauty built by Lord Brahma in the picturesque Sahya Valley surrounded by a thick forest.

As per the legend, when Lord Brahma was travelling around the world on his Hansa, he became attracted by the beauty of the landscape around Sahya Valley and descended near an Amla tree. Beneath the tree, he noticed an idol and recognised it as that of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, he built a temple and installed the idol with the help of Devas.

Surrounded by the river Kabani, the island is easily accessible by rafts or fiber boats run by Kerala Tourism Department.

8) Wayanad Adventure Camp at Karlad lake

If you’re looking for a holiday filled with activities and adventures, it might be a great idea to spend a day or two at the Wayanad Adventure Camp at Karlad lake. Located in Thariode, Wayanad, this adventure camp is managed by DTPC, a part of the Kerala Tourism department.

Some of these thrilling activities include zip-lining, kayaking, rock climbing, boating, archery, paintball and camping (among others). 10) Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

It takes around one and a half hour for the safari. As per the forest department guidelines, only 40 jeeps are permitted in the morning safari and up to 20 jeeps during the evening. 11) Banasura Hill

Known as the second highest peak of Wayanad, the Banasura hill is yet another perfect place to go for a trekking excursion after Chembra peak. For trekking, you’ll need to get a permit from North Wayanad Forest Division office located in the town of Mananthavady, about 25 kilometres from Banasura. The trek is around 9 kilometres one way and starts at a point nearby the Banasura Hill Resort. 12) Chain Tree, Vythiri

It is called a Chain tree as there is a massive chain hanging from the tree. Local tribes living in that region believe in multiple legends and mythical tales associated with this Ficus tree. One of the legends states that a tribal person was killed by Britishers during the Colonial times whose spirit still lives in this tree.

Another legend says that the spirit is of a Mahout (an elephant rider and keeper) who brought Britishers to Wayanad district for the first time. Reading these legends, the Chain Tree in Wayanad sounds a lot similar to the Om Banna Temple in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

14) Ancient Jain Temple

India is an amalgamation of religious diversity and the ancient Jain temple is a perfect example of that. Built in the 13th century, in the era of Vijayanagar dynasty, it’s an ancient Jain temple with traditional stone carving on its walls and is a historic Jainism landmark in Wayanad, Kerala. Even though the temple’s state of maintenance is not at its best, it still offers a calm environment. As they say, the ruins tell more tales than the living ones.

Therefore, as the world heritage site, the ancient Jain temple is one of the best places to visit in Wayanad. In the inner sanctum, you can see a carving of Lord Mahavir on a rock section. Once a religious place, the Jain temple was invaded and used to store ammunition by Tipu Sultan’s army during their attacks on Wayanad.

Talking about the temple’s architecture, it was built with huge granite pillars which were extensively carved into various designs such as the Tirthankara, floral designs, sarpabandha, etc. Although the outside of the temple is mostly plain, the insides were carved heavily. The temple has a mandapa right in front of the main structure, which is surrounded by pillars but without any rooftop. It is called the Namaskar Mandapa. The main structure, however, features a mukhmandapa, a mahamandapa, and an inner sanctum. The inner sanctum, surprisingly, has no statue placed on the main seat. It is being said that the main deity's idol is currently placed at Ananthanath Temple at Kalpetta. The main seat remains empty and doesn't host any worshipping throughout the year.

However, once a year during the festival of Mahavir Jayanthi (Lord Mahaveer's birthday), the idol is brought down to this temple for annual worshipping. The doorways to the inner sanctum, however, have multiple statues of Jain Tirthankara’s and several other sacred Jain figures.
