You have heard of vegetable farms, you’ve probably read Animal Farm, but have you ever seen or been to a crocodile farm? Contrary to the name, this is not a farm where crocodiles are grown and sold, it is the Agasthya Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre formerly known as the Steve Irwin Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre. Located in the densely forested Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve, you must make it a point to visit the Crocodile Farm during your stay at one of our Club Mahindra resorts in Kerala – specifically our lovely resort in Poovar.
Home to 44 Mugger Crocodiles, this Centre is responsible for the breeding of these behemoths in order to later release them into the wild to replenish their numbers. Apart from these crocodiles, the larger biosphere is also home to many other nature reserves such as Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve which you can visit when you Visit the Crocodile Farm. These tropical forests are home to rare animals such as Tigers, Elephants, Sloth Bears, Nilgiri Tahr, Gaur, Sambars, Barking Deer, Indian Porcupines and Malabar Squirrels. The Biosphere reserve is also inhabited by many tribal settlements, amounting up to a total population of 3,000. These communities rely majorly on the biological resources for their survival.
When you Visit the Crocodile Farm, you aren’t just visiting a Centre that works for the survival of these endangered reptiles, you get to visit one of India’s last great wild frontiers where people and animals coexist in harmony, like they did centuries ago. For a trip back to a time when nature and mankind were not two separate entities, one of the best things to do in Poovar is to Visit the Crocodile Farm.
With Club Mahindra, you can witness many such magnificent experiences across 100+ resorts in India and abroad! To know more about what it feels like to Visit the Crocodile Farm, read the Club Mahindra member reviews.
