According to traditional folklore, the original temple was built over Hari-Griha, the residence of Lord Krishna by his grandson, King Vajranabha. It was destroyed by Mahmud Begada in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The morning aarti at the temple is early at around 6.30 am and the temple remains open to devotees until 1.00 pm.
