The original inhabitants of Channapatna were artisans who made lacquered wooden toys, trained by Persian toy makers at the behest of Tipu Sultan. Channapatna has a 300-year old history of toy-making and has numerous workshops where skilled artisans produce these toys, which are now collectors’ items.
