Activities at Club Mahindra Madikeri, Coorg - Kodagu Valley Resort

stories

  • The Golden Temple of the South By Prachi

Picture a Tibetan monastery and what do you see? A quiet place of worship, monks with their heads bowed down in prayer and an overall atmosphere of austerity. Now imagine my shock when I entered a monastery and was confronted by a 60-feet tall, gold-plated statue of the Buddha against a highly colourful backdrop of dragons. The imposing Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery, established in 1963, is a short detour off the drive from Bangalore or Mysore to the coffee country of Coorg (Kodagu). And it’s a detour worth making!

  • The Cauvery and her stories at Coorg By Anuradha Shankar

Long, long ago, it is said, a crow overturned a pitcher of water. No, I am not talking of the Aesop’s fable, but instead, the story of the Kaveri. As the legend goes, sage Agasthya held the sacred Kaveri in his kamandalu (a vessel for holding water) to perform his rituals. Meanwhile, the gods pondered about how they could liberate the river so she could enrich the whole land, and help the people, instead of being confined for the sage’s use alone. It was Ganesha, the elephant headed God, who volunteered for the task. Taking the form of a crow, he alighted on the kamandalu, and gently toppled it. The river rushed out, and flowed over the land, rendering it fertile, bringing water to parched throats. Eons have passed, but the Kaveri flows on, though our human follies have managed to slow her down, and make her a seasonal river. Yet, her presence lingers over the region, rendering it rich and fertile. Nowhere is she more evident than at her birthplace, the very site where these events unfolded – Talacauvery.

Sight Seeing

1. Iruppu Falls

The enigmatic Iruppu Falls have mythological origins and have been created by the descent of a river over step like rock formations. A gradual trek leads there the falls are simply exquisite to watch. A shower of water from these falls is believed to be very holy.

2. Dubare Elephant Camp

An intimate experience with the elephants 42 kilometres from the resort on the way to Kushalnagar! This is a unique tour where guests get an opportunity to give a bath, scrub and feed the elephants at Dubare Forest. These activities are conducted only in the morning and you will need extra clothes and towel. Do not give this a miss

3. Golden Temple & Nisargadhama Tour

This tour takes you to the exquisite Golden temple and the second largest Tibetan camp in India, where the noisy streets of the south suddenly seem so far away. You can then proceed to Nisargadhama where you can visit the deer park, enjoy an elephant ride, check in on the rabbit den and take a trip to the boating facility (seasonal) as well as the attraction that is the hanging bridge.

4. Talacauvery Tour

The confluence of three rivers Cauvery, Kanike and Sujyothi is home to the beautiful Bagamandala Temple. This temple is home to many small shrines dedicated to the worship of different gods and goddesses. One can even bathe at the birthplace of the River Cauvery – Talacauvery. This is an experience in itself.

5. Abbey Falls

One doesn’t just visit Abbey Falls but takes part in a journey that meanders down a narrow road, makes its way through a blend of steep ups and downs, twists and turns, and wriggles through the green and dense foliage of the surrounding coffee plantations. It is a truly exciting trip.

6. Madikeri Tour

The Madikeri Tour spans a visit to Abbey falls, Gaddige, the Omkareshwar Temple and the Raja’s Seat. At Gaddige one can visit the intricate Indo Saracen style tombs that house the remains of Vir Rajendra and his wife Mahadevi Amma. Rajas Seat on the other hand is a spectacular hilltop park that affords a grand view of the surrounding ranges. You can appreciate a perfect sunset here while the kids enjoy a toy train ride.
