The oceans, with their hidden secrets, have intrigued humans since the beginning of time. About three million shipwrecks have occurred in human history, burying unimaginable treasures. Gold coins and ingots, jewellery, gems, and artefacts worth billions of dollars have been recovered till date. It is believed that $771 trillion worth of gold still lies under water!

Here are some of the most astounding treasures ever found at the bottom of the sea.

1) Antikythera treasure ($120–160M)

Discovered in 1990 off the coast of Antikythera in Greece, the treasure included gold jewellery and coins, marble and bronze statues, and various artefacts. It is believed the ship carrying these valuables sunk more than 2000 years ago. World’s first analogue computer, which was perhaps used for navigation by tracking the movement of the heavenly bodies, was also unearthed. The entire treasure is worth approximately $120 to 160 million.

To get a glimpse of natural treasures worth millions, go snorkelling into the waters of Goa. Under the water lies sea – corals, seaweeds, plants and a plethora of fish, which is sure to give you a memorable experience.

2) Titanic ($190–200M)

The most famous shipwreck of our time, the supposedly unsinkable Titanic hit an iceberg and went down with a treasure of almost $300 million. The passenger liner was carrying stunning gold jewellery, diamonds, precious gems, intricate sculptures, expensive artefacts, paintings, silverware, china, watches, and perfumes. The ship was found at the bottom of the Atlantic 33 years ago. Many of the treasures discovered were auctioned in 2012 and 2015 and were valued at $190 million.

3) SS Republic ($120–180M)

Over 50,000 gold and silver coins were discovered from the shipwreck of the SS Republic in 2003. The ship was on its way to New Orleans, USA, in 1865 when a hurricane struck off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. Apart from a stash of gold coins, about 14,000 artefacts, stoneware containers, redware tea sets, statues, and glasses were found. The total value of the treasure is estimated to be $120-180 million.

4) SS Gairsoppa ($200M)

In 1941, British treasury ship SS Gairsoppa was on its way to Galway ferrying a cargo of iron and tea – plus 240 tons of silver bullion for the war effort – when it was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland. It sank with 85 passengers on board. Built in 1919, the ship had also served during WW II. The wreck was found by Odyssey Marine in 2011. It recovered 40 tons of silver worth $200 million.

5) The Whydah Gally ($400M)

Legend has it that this is the only pirate ship ever unearthed in history. Carrying gold jewellery, gold coins, and cannons, Pirate Captain ‘Black Sam’ Bellamy’s ‘slave ship’ sank in 1717, taking with it hundreds of passengers. The wreck of The Whydah Gally was discovered in 1984, off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, USA. More than 200,000 artefacts from the ship have been unearthed till date. The entire haul is estimated to be worth a whopping $400 million.

6) The Atocha Motherlode ($450M)

A massive cargo of gold, silver, copper, precious jewels and indigo belonging to the Spanish government sank off the coast of Florida in 1622. When the news reached Spain, it desperately tried to salvage the wreckage but failed due to the terrible weather. It was only in 1985 that the Atocha Motherlode, as the treasure is famously known, was discovered. The booty recovered is worth $450 million, which is half of the treasure that went under.

7) The Black Swan Project ($500M)

This is by far the largest treasure found in recent history. Odyssey Marine discovered more than 600,000 silver coins and hundreds of gold coins off the coast of Gibraltar in 2007, during an excavation called The Black Swan Project. The Spanish government claimed that the treasure came from the Spanish vessel Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, which sank in 1804. After a legal battle the booty was returned to Spain. The treasure was valued at $500 million.
