As per the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) statistics, the Tourism and Hospitality Industry in India is projected to reach about US $125 billion by Financial Year 27, and the influx of international tourists is projected to reach 30.5 million by 2028. The statistics are only a reflection of the Indian tourism sector's growth potential.

The Finance Minister of India, while presenting Union Budget 2024 on 1st February, has announced several initiatives to give India's growth potential the fillip it needs. The initiatives are aimed at leveraging the Indian tourism industry's growth potential to generate new employment, boost revenue, and develop new infrastructure to make India more tourism-friendly for domestic and international tourists.

Let us see how the Union Budget 2024 will boost the Indian tourism sector

  • First and foremost, while presenting the Union Budget in the parliament, the finance minister, in their speech, acknowledged that Tourism is a critical sector that holds opportunities for entrepreneurship and new jobs and has a vast potential that is yet to be tapped.
  • To meet the fund requirements for the various schemes implemented by the Ministry of Tourism, the finance minister announced an allocation of INR 2400 crores in the Union Budget 2024-25.
  • From the total amount allocated this year to the Ministry of Tourism, a significant portion of the budget, i.e., INR 1742 crores, will be used for developing tourism infrastructure and INR 242 for promotion and branding. And INR 1412 crore will be allocated to the 'Swadesh Darshan Scheme.'
  • The finance minister also announced that the Tourism Ministry would take an innovative and integrated approach to develop 50 new tourist destinations under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme to provide a wholesome tourism experience. This includes providing digital, virtual and physical connectivity and availability of tourist guides and increasing tourist security.
  • The Tourism Ministry is directed to develop a new mobile application that covers all relevant aspects of tourism.
  • All the individual states will be encouraged to set up 'Unity Malls' in prominent locations to promote the local handicrafts and other products of the state and develop local artisans and small-scale industries.
  • The Finance Ministry has allocated an additional INR 299 crore for developing tourism infrastructure and promoting tourism prospects of the northeastern states.

Apart from the above announcements, the finance minister also made a special appeal to the Indian citizens to travel within India rather than going overseas to promote the local tourism industry. So, as general citizens of India, there is a lot to look forward to in the coming years as India prepares to become a popular tourist hotspot for tourists from all over the world.
