Spread over an expanse of 520 square kilometres in Nainital, Uttarakhand, the Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park in India, consisting of grasslands, a lake, riverine belts, marshy land and hills. One of the most popular ecotourism destinations in India, tourists are allowed only in demarcated areas of the reserve. Since Project Tiger was launched here for the first time in Asia, in 1973, to protect the endangered tigers, Corbett has since been known as the land of tigers.
Taking a wildlife safari with your family is indeed one of the top things to do in Corbett. Apart from the famed Royal Bengal tiger, the national park is home to several endangered species of flora and fauna adding upto 50 species of mammals, 580 species of birds, 25 species of reptiles and around 110 species of trees.
Most of the reserve is forests where you can spot Sal trees in abundance along with Khair, Sissoo, Jacaranda, Mango, Eucalyptus, Teak Silver Oak, Bamboo, Haldu, Peepal, etc. Play the identification game with your kids spotting other animals such as Asiatic Elephant, Barking Deer, Hog Deer, Sambar, Asiatic Black Bear, Sloth Bear, Leopards, Jungle Cats, Fishing Cat, Langur, Rhesus Macaques, Himalayan Goral, Otters and reptiles like King Cobra, Alligators, Crocodiles etc. Soak in the delightful aural ambience created by several species of birds like the Blossom-headed Parakeet, Red Jungle Fowl, Indian Pitta, Hornbill, Orange-breasted Green pigeon, Eagles Tawny Fish Owl and more.
The tourist zones are divided into 5 safari zones namely - Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Durga and Dhikala. The Sitabani zone is outside the tiger reserve. You can opt for any of the three types of safari - elephant, jeep and canter. Elephant safari only covers the Bijrani zone, while the jeep covers Bijrani, Sitabani and Jhirna, between 6.30-10am and 1.30-5pm. Durga zone requires to be separately covered via jeep.
Perhaps the best sighting of fauna happens in the Dhikala zone, where only canter safari is an option, twice a day, from 6.30-11.30pm and 12-5.30pm.
