We all know that the lion is crowned as the “king of the jungle.” The Asiatic Lion confirms this belief with its majestic bearing and distinctly regal appearance. Calling the Gir forest home, these lions reach about 110cm in height and have a striking length-wise fold of skin that runs along their bellies.
They walk with grace, never letting their royal heels touch the ground. So silent are they that even the slightest distraction will make you miss a sighting during your forest safari in the wilderness of Gir.
In 1913, there were only 20 lions in the Gir national park. With conservation efforts, the number has risen to 523 as per a census report of 2015. Of these, 106 are adult males, 201 are adult females, and the remaining are sub-adult lions of which the exact gender division is unknown.
Weather-wise, December to March is considered to be the best time to visit Gir. Considering the uniqueness of this habitat, Gir resorts make for great summer holiday getaways. On your safari, you get to take unforgettable photographs against a backdrop featuring this one-of-a-kind animal during the months of April and May.
Also present in the forests are jackals, Sambar deer, India foxes, Chowsinghas, striped hyenas, and over 200 species of birds. The most convenient way to explore all that the jungle has to offer is through the Club Mahindra Gir resort. It provides a good base for you and your kids to set out exploring in the mornings and enjoy the in-resort activities in the evenings.
