Strewn across the banks of the river Kabini in Kerala, you’ll find the unexplored and unspoiled beauty of Kuruva Island. Kuruvadweep, as it’s popularly called, is nature’s call to travellers hoping to break away from the hustle-bustle of everyday life and settle in amidst some peace and tranquillity. One of the prominent places to visit in Wayanad, the place serves as an idyllic picnic spot and soft trekking destination for couples and families alike.
Situated about 17 kilometres from Mananthavady in the Wayanad district of Kerala, Kuruvadweep is embedded with a rich ecosystem. Brimming with flora and fauna, and dense in mangrove forests and bamboo tress, this natural reserve and rainforest is inhabited by rare species of birds, butterflies, animals and plants.
Since this is a reserve forest, it is supervised by the Forest Department and Kerala Tourism Department. You can reach here either by raft or boat. Tickets for the same are available at Pulpally and Mananthavady. If you wish to avoid rush-hour and untimely crowds, you should plan your visit on weekdays.
It is important to note that the site is a strictly no-plastic zone and there is nothing to eat here. So, if you’re traveling with children, you should plan your meals accordingly. Monsoons too should be avoided as there are chances of floods.
The reserve is open from 9:30 AM to 4:15 PM and provides a fun excursion for the entire family. However, since there is a cap on the number of people visiting the island daily, it is advised that you plan your visit early. Once you’re at the reserve, you can while away time by taking lazy walks along the shoreline, and also find yourself a nice spot to unwind. One of the biggest draws here is that you get a beautiful glimpse of the two rivulets that surround this island.
When planning a family getaway to Wayanad, exploring the inherent beauty of this natural reserve and rainforest should be atop your bucket list.
