The Muthunga Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Kerala, was established in 1973 and is attached to the Nagarhole, Bandipur, and Mudumalai parks, which are situated in the neighboring states. It is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is also called Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Owing to its rich biodiversity and offering a wonderful blend of nature and wildlife, it is one of the best places to visit in Wayanad with family.

It is spread across 345 square kilometers in area and was included in the ‘Project Elephant’ program in 1991-92. It is the second-largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. Come here with your kids to teach them about different kinds of trees as semi-evergreen, dry deciduous, and moist deciduous trees grow here. Some other vegetation includes maruthi, karimaruthi, venteak, rosewood, and vengal. Representing the Animal Kingdom are elephants, panthers, tigers, jungle cats, monkeys, civet cats, and wild dogs. Your kids are sure to be excited as they spend time spotting each of these beasts of the wild. There is a variety of birds that call this place home. These include peacocks, owls, cuckoos, babblers, jungle fowls, and woodpeckers!

Kurichyad, Sulthan Bathery, Tholpetty, and Muthanga are the four ranges of this park, of which the last two are the most popular tourist places in Wayanad. Plantations divide them and serve as eco-tourism centers where visitors are taught about conservation and sustainability.
