Dubbed a paradise for wild beasts, the Kanha National Park safari is indeed as informative as it is enthralling. In the Maikal mountain range in the Satpuras of Madhya Pradesh, discover a variety of wildlife that roam the rolling grasslands, hills, and vales.

The Maikal Hills towering over the greenery of the Bamboo and Sal abundant in this region, lend the area with a cool and unparalleled panoramic ambience. In this serene beauty, spot some of the rarest of wild beasts like the Barasingha, chital, gaur, hyena, and of course the Royal Bengal Tiger.

Sedate Sojourn in Wildlife

We stayed at the Club Mahindra resort, which despite its proximity to the forest had all modern amenities. Each room was spacious allowing us to spend quality time together in a luxurious setting. The food, service, fun activities and people offered let us indulge in our lazy lavishness. The Gourmet Express was perfect and delectable.

We easily were addicted to the pampered days at Club Mahindra Kanha, the summer though dictated we take some day trips. On various days during the trip, we spotted seven Tigers apart from deer, fowl and other wildlife. Our Journey - Into the Wild!

Club Mahindra organized a 4x4 open six-seater jeep for us, which was a safer and more comfortable option than the elephant safari ride. Our day began early and after a healthy breakfast from the great spread that the resort offers its patrons, we headed out to the forest. We drove right in and as we moved slowly on the predetermined route we saw birds and animals alike moving freely and fearlessly amid the fauna. The people there advise driving slowly and staying as quiet as possible, because animals often wander close to the track and sometimes, you can see them standing right in front of your vehicle as you drive!

If you drive real slow and stay extremely quiet and still, you will not disturb them as they look soulfully at you through their black, brown, and green eyes. Sometimes the slightest movement will have them bounding away out of sight into the dense forest. Wildlife sightings to behold!

As the jeep moved through the jungle, we heard a screech and at that same instant, our guide said excitedly, “Udhar Dekho!” (Look there!) Barasingha! That was our first spotting. Did you know that although Kanha is a tiger reserve under “Project Tiger,” there is actually a whole lot more to see in this wonderful sanctuary? On our first day out we spotted the Barasingha, the Nilgai (it actually is blue), and some peafowl.

Our first sighting was the mascot of the reserve, the Barasingha, a swamp deer. Its bara singh (twelve-tined horns) are indeed impressive as is its imposing height of nearly 4 feet, not to mention its grace. We also spotted the majestic chital or the spotted deer strutting about showing off their three-pronged antlers.

A shrill scream broke the silence of the forest. It was the Papeeha, a hawk-cuckoo, probably calling out to its mate in the monsoon. An interesting discovery was a unique bird. Or was it a duck. Teals are multi-coloured birds and the males and females speak a different language, while the former whistles the latter quacks! Majestic Grace - The Royal Bengal Tiger

Lying about lazily and looking at you through those innocent brown eyes, you would think it is as mild as a domestic cat – until it roars that is – then you run for your life!

The Royal Bengal Tiger is indeed the star of the show! It was a sighting that would make our trips one of the most memorable ones we’ve ever had.

After a 5 blissful hours of bird watching and animal spotting among the lush green of the forest we returned to our Club Mahindra Kanha resort for some much-needed R-n-R followed by a wholesome meal in the club restaurant.

A Trip Like No Other - Where deer bark and foxes fly
