The best time to visit Jaisalmer is usually from November to the end of March, however, February is possibly the one month when the city truly comes alive in all its glory! Most of us plan take at least one vacation in the year and Jaisalmer is destination that often gets overlooked. There are multiple events and festivities happening across the city, here are a few of them to consider making that trip!
This year, the desert festival starts on the 17th of February and goes on for 3 days. This annual event is celebrated amidst the beautiful dunes of the Thar desert in the Sam Dunes. While this location is 40 kms away from the main city, reaching by car is most convenient. Romantic, untouched and relatively private, this area comes alive with the festivities during this three day extravaganza. With camel races, gymnastic stunts, delicious food, interesting stalls that display artefacts and handicrafts; the desert festival is truly an experience worth taking a trip to Rajasthan for!
Jaisalmer Fort, Gadisar Lake, Patwon ki Haveli, Sardar Bazaar and the Desert National Park are a few attractions among the numerous others that people seek out when they visit the city. The magnificence of the forts and palaces can only be experienced through a visit and the pristine lakes, camel safaris on the golden deserts, luxurious hotels and the vibrant markets are a lifetime experience. The culture is rich and stupendously vivid for a tourist to seek and absorb. There are havelis, palaces and forts that have tremendous history attached which can be understood with the help of the guides. The traditional Dal Bati Churma and Gatte ki Subzi are all time favourites, but you should also try the Ker Sangri, which are desert beans with capers. It’s a local favourite. Other popular vegetarian dishes in Jaisalmer also include Bhanon Aloo -potatoes stuffed with mint paste, and served with gravy, and Kadi Pakoras, flour dumplings cooked in yogurt sauce. Non vegetarians can feast on the Murgh-e-Subz, boneless strips of chicken, stir fried with shredded vegetables. The Tandoor Thali is for those with a hearty appetite. With two chicken items, one being the famous tikka, kebabs, and naan, it is a fulfilling meal you will not find elsewhere!
