It is possible for first-time visitors to Jaisalmer to mistake the town for a desert mirage; such is the ethereal beauty of the place. Jaisalmer is nestled in the western region of Rajasthan, amidst picturesque sand dunes. It is surrounded by Thar, the world’s only desert that’s also known to be fertile.
Teeming with havelis, colourful marketplaces, and numerous Hindu and Jain temples, Jaisalmer is a tourist’s delight. Jodhpur, another popular tourist destination in Rajasthan, isn’t too far. The distance between Jaisalmer & Jodhpur is around 300 km, so if visitors to Jodhpur have a couple of days to spare, they can visit Jaisalmer as well.
The two towns are very well connected by road and rail. Here’s how to reach Jaisalmer from Jodhpur:
Rajasthan boasts of some of India’s best-maintained roads. Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are connected via National Highways 11 and 125. Regular buses operate between the two cities and take around five hours. There are taxi services as well, but it would be best to rent a car and drive down. This way you get to make your own itinerary.
There’s also the less common but exciting option of travelling from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer on camelback. While this isn’t recommended for a family for obvious reasons, intrepid solo travellers might be tempted.
