Nainital, deriving its name from Lake Naini, a popular hill station in Uttarakhand, is flocked by travellers from all over the country every year. Honeymoon couples, backpackers, and families- Nainital has something for every traveller.
The lakes in and around Nainital are breathtaking and mesmerising, offering a perfect recluse to the travellers from the busy city life. Witnessing the magical sunsets (or even sunrises!) while rowing across these crystal clear lakes can transcend you to a world of calmness and beauty.
If that’s got you excited, here are 7 lakes you can consider exploring in and around Nainital.

Located right at the heart of the city, this is one of the most scenic lakes in Nainital. Surrounded by 7 hills, this crescent-shaped freshwater lake stretches for about 3 kilometres making it a perfect spot for boating, kayaking or yachting.
Located about 35 kilometres from the nearest Kathgodam Railway Station, the best time to visit the lake is between March and June. However, you can also consider visiting between October and February to experience the chill snowfall.
One of the best lakes in Nainital for sunset, Naini Lake is open from 6 AM to 6 PM on all days.
Also known as Sarita Tal, this heart-shaped lake (oh-so-romantic!) near the Himalayan Botanical Garden is known for its jade-green lake water and mighty Himalayan ranges surrounding the lake. About 8-10 kilometres from the Nainital city, Sariyatal can be easily reached by hiring a cab. The lake is open from 10 AM to 5 PM on all days.

Surrounded by cedar, deodar and pine trees, Khurpatal is often overlooked by travellers. Just 2 kilometres from Sariyatal, Khurpatal surely shouldn’t be missed. Among the best off-beat places to visit in Nainital, Khurpatal offers tourist activities like fishing, angling and boating. Don't forget to explore some beautiful nature trails around the lake.

Sattal, or “Saat Taal”, meaning Seven Lakes, is located at the confluence of seven different freshwater lakes. Just about 23 kilometres from Nainital, it is one of the most frequented lakes near Nainital. However, despite the heavy influx of tourists, it is still one of the few unpolluted freshwater lakes around Nainital. The lake is a perfect spot for birdwatchers as migratory birds come here to escape the harsh winters of the Himalayan ranges. You can also camp near the lake or even go fishing or angling after taking the required permit.

Named after ‘Bhima’- the mythological character of the Mahabarata, this vast lake is just about a 1.5-hour drive from Nainital. While the lake is not to be missed, the temples such as the ancient Bhimeshwar temple next to the lake are surely worth visiting too.

The lake that has nine corners, Naukuchiatal, is quite famous among honeymoon couples. The lush green thickets, misty mountains and the placid water of the lake make it nothing less than a paradise on earth (if ever there was one). You can book your accommodations at Club Mahindra Naukuchiatal, one of the best resorts in Uttarakhand, offering a breathtaking view of the lake.

Right next to Naukuchiatal is Kamal Tal. Derived from the words Kamal (lotus) and Tal (Lake), it is true to its name, as you can see lotuses growing all over this small but cutesy lake. Kamal Tal is a favourite among tourists because of its picturesque appeal. When the vibrant fishes swim among the fully-bloomed lotuses, the spectacle is worth capturing in your mind forever!
